Bugger me, that was good. Nice response to all the sh*t in the press recently, and a great film with proper car content that was entertaining without being forced. Those cars were beautiful, and they deserved to make up the bulk of the episode (like the US supercar road trip in the 2010 Christmas episode). Nice to see a reminder that the boys are car people, and that Jeremy is a serious, focused driver when he isn't disappearing sideways in a pall of tyre smoke. As far as I'm concerned, that's what it's all about. Particularly loved the three of them talking to their cars. Not sure why, but that got me

Apparently James was driving AWAY from Rome when he was on the Roman Road. Why is that not surprising!

I really, really enjoyed this, and it's good to see that they've heeded the most rational of the comments made about some of their most recent shows and have got back to car-based fun. Yes, there was some cocking about, but it was well under control. The car challenge should finally have put paid to those that carp that "they're not actually good drivers" and was genuinely exciting; I realised all the muscles in my body had gone tense during the last five minutes or so.
I agree with Wy that the section where they were talking to their cars was actually quite touching. And I'm wondering if James is stepping forward as the controversial one; he was really quite naughty tonight.
Edit: Where is everyone? Surely we've got enough UK members on here who want to post a comment! I really can't believe that hardly anyone has a point of view. I'm off to twitter and Final Gear to see what's going on there.

Apparently for a few minutes during the programme James was at the top of 'world-wide trending', which I don't entirely understand but I think it means that more people were tweeting his name than anything else world-wide. Hammond was in the top 10 too, as was Top Gear, but not Jeremy - interesting.
Edit: On FG, 72% have given it 9 or 10 out of 10, and there is much relief that the boys seem to be 'back in their groove'.
Edit 2: the BBC Top Gear site is down due to 'an abnormal volume of traffic'.

I must say... James had quite an impressive string of swear words there while parking in Rome. I would love to know what he all said!

Well, I'm here anyway. I always cheat and record it for later playback, so I can fast forward through the SIARPC if I'm not interested in them, which I wasn't.
Yes, it was vintage Top Gear tonight (even though I have to come out about the fact that I find supercars a bit of a bore). Even Final Gear can't think of anything to whine about, although they no doubt will later in the series. I loved the fake montage at the beginning, Hammond stuck in the breakdown truck (been there, done that), James' conversation with the Roman centurion ("There are no restaurants around here"; "No, the ground clearance isn't very good"), the news and - yes - tonight's shirt. And Hammond REALLY likes that jacket, doesn't he?.
Oh, and my home town is twinned with Imola. So there.

Tonights episode was excellent. I agree, it showed the boys are good drivers and that Top Gear has definitely not run its course just yet. Also i was a bit apprehensive about Will.I.Am as the star in the reasonably priced car but i found him quite interesting and as Jeremy said "inspirational". All in all a job well done

I think it was a 10. It litteraly flew by. I think it was nice of Jeremy to wonder how Richard would do driving so fast. To those people who think they don't do their own driving ******it! I also liked the part of them talking to their cars. William did nothing for me. I know who Fergie is. He sounds like a very charitable person. They looked like they had recovered from what ever was ailing them, mainly James. Shirt is quite eye catching. It was definitely about cars.

Brilliant episode - and quite frankly, it needed to be after the India special. Relieved to see the programme back on form and concentrating on what it does best. Fantastic supercars and the TG3 being themselves instead of acting in pathetic comedy sketches. Definite 9/10 from me.

Definately a good start to the new series. I loved the fake film that was made for the media ;D
Only bit I didn't bother with was the SIARPC, which to be honest I never do watch, unless it's somebody that I'm interested in seeing tear up the track.
Quite impressed by Noble's dedication to providing Richard with his new car! If I'd been in charge of that, I'd have sent over a Marina aand told him to lump it LOL Breaking a Noble like that - shameful.
But yes - I enjoyed this a lot more than I did the Christmas special. Hope the rest of the series lives up to it.

I loved the first ep was good 'old fashioned' TG reporting.Lots of messing around and fun. Enjoyed it all the more for watching it with a brilliant friend who is into TG and all.
The May love still rolls on,horrid shirt and all.

Thanks for the link Dahlia. I was a bit worried about where to get this ep. And yes, I loved it. There was nothing I wanted to skip, even if I'm not a fan of Black Eyed Peas or Will.I.Am I must agree with Jeremy that he's pretty inspirational character. Was not very impressed with James' shirt , but at least he's faithful to his own style. Like many others, I also thought the christmas special left much room for improvement and if the first episode is anything to go by, this season looks like it might fulfill the expectations.

The May love still rolls on,horrid shirt and all. Good, solid, classic episode of TG only made better through technology. Antonia and I fired up the yahoo messenger (like Skype for you young'uns) and opened the door to the proxy tunnel so that we could talk and watch the show together while it was broadcast. We even had a bit of virtual Victoria Sponge cake. Cool way to watch the show. ;D Thanks Antonia but you're still wrong about the shirt.

Has it started........oh it's seems I'm on another planet ;D Don't worry, lew, I'm sending up a Reliant Robin space shuttle to bring you back to earth - though it might be with rather a bump (and possibly a loud explosion and lots of flames!) Antonia and I fired up the yahoo messenger (like Skype for you young'uns) and opened the door to the proxy tunnel so that we could talk and watch the show together while it was broadcast. We even had a bit of virtual Victoria Sponge cake. Cool way to watch the show. Extremely cool! I have no idea what you're describing (does the proxy tunnel have a big black and white rotating circle, like the Time Tunnel?) but it sounds like fun!

I think the shot of all three cars on first course together was great, can someone do a screen cap. What did jeremy have on his sweater I can't tell. I understand there were more than 5 million authorized viewers is that figure normal, low or what? I just watched it again. One review I read I belive on the Telegraph mentioned how testes is always mentioned! She gave it 3 stars.

That used to be the summer figure, with the winter series getting quite a bit higher, but some things have changed. For one thing, they've pushed the series back to post Christmas, for another it's usually the most popular show on I-player, which reduces the live audience a bit, and, lastly, quite a few people have just gone off it and don't watch any more.

This from the Guardian
TOP GEAR POWERS BACK WITH MORE THAN 5M VIEWERS Motoring show hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May retains title of BBC2's most popular show.
Controversy about Jeremy Clarkson does not seem to have damaged ratings
The star in a reasonably outrageous programme – AKA Top Gear – returned to BBC2 with more than 5 million viewers on Sunday night.
Jeremy Clarkson has endured no shortage of controversies since the last run of the BBC2 motoring show from striking public sector workers to a complaint from the Indian High Commission.
Top Gear, presented by Clarkson alongside Richard Hammond and James May, was watched by 5.1 million viewers, a 17.2% share of the audience between 8pm and 9pm, including 793,000 on BBC HD, remaining by some distance BBC2's most popular show.
It was 150% up on the BBC2 slot average over the last three months and left Channel 4's docusoap The Hotel on the starting blocks, with 1.3 million viewers, a 4.2% share, across Channel 4 and Channel 4+1 (see our new ratings reporting style below).
It was a particular boost for the generally underwhelming BBC HD channel – due to be replaced with BBC2 HD – which enjoyed an 800% uplift on its three-month slot average.

I really liked it. It seemed genuine, like they had left room for some improvisation and spontaneity. (In contrast to the India special, which seemed much more scripted and forced (but still was funny, though).)
