I learned to drive in a Hillman Imp (don't suppose many of you will remember them.) My first real car was a "classic,"a bull nosed morris with split screen, I followed that with (hangs head in shame,) a Morris Marina. The man described it as akin to driving a Sherman Tank. Ah yes, the Hillman Imp... I see one quite often when I go into London. It's in one of the museums Joking aside, and given that I have a Herald, age and car type don't necessarily go hand in hand around here (another member, considerably younger than me, used to have a lovely old Moggie, though she let that one go a while back)! I've gone into a very envious phase recently having discovered that my dad's first car was an old (even then, in 1962) Humber Super Snipe. And dad, for his part, always said he could picture me driving something like an Imp, so when I bought Gerald he wasn't exactly surprised ;D Perhaps because of the people in this part of the world who worked for Ford back in the day, there are a couple of remarkable old cars you see pottering around here, too. There's a lovely old Anglia and from time to time I see a fab MkII Consul (I think it's a lowline, but it's hard to tell). I once met a chap coming in the opposite direction in a Zephyr on one of my driving lessons. He had a quiff. I remember all of those ;D I'm a bit of a nut for older cars. Wy, where did you find that picture of the Cavalier? It's almost the same colour as the one we saw, if a shade brighter (I think, but then my sight is leg-endary, as we know). I googled 'Vauxhall Cavalier' and looked at the images! That was one of the first ones I saw. I think that's probably the same colour as the one we saw, but the photo looks to be at least 20 years old (and taken on actual film stock). I expect it would have been a bit brighter then! Saw this little old Fiat 500 on the way home from a friends after spending the afternoon in and out of their spa - bliss: (snipped to save space) I quite liked it. Awwwwwww! I love proper 500s. Lovely ;D

I had a 500 once. Sold it to a friend for forty quid, but before he had time to pay me, about a week, I think, he had a minor prang and it fell apart like a clown car. The garage that collected it said it was like blue cheese underneath. I didn't dare to ask for the money after that.

My Mum drove a Hillman Imp for many years until it caught fire and the fire brigade were called. It was upsetting for Mum but I found the experience quite exciting......it was a very noisy car I seem to recall.

The Hillman Imp was a terrible car. As soon as I'd passed my test I vowed never to drive one again, and I never did.

XJ and I spotted this little gem when we were out and about last night. There are usually some nice old cars around there - an immaculate black 2CV (which you might see in the background) is usually about, as is this Renault 4, though I'm glad to say it has been adopted since then and looks lovely and shiny these days ;D But this is a bit of a surprise - a BMW Isetta on the road! It was a lovely bright yellow, though you can't really see that because my phone takes rubbish photos in the dark, and yes, it does have a wicker basket on the back! I haven't seen one on the road since I was very, very small. When I was out and about this morning I saw another 2CV Camionette, but in much better nick than this one. The driver gave me a wave as I went past!

There was one parked over the road the other day, perhaps they are breeding. This morning I drove past, first the Porche garage, then JCT 600 which sells Aston's, Ferrari's, Masserati's etc. I drove slowly past it and wished.

Oh, memories! When I first knew my husband, about a hundred years ago, he had a bubble car. Then a few years ago he decided he wanted another one (sensible version of the mid-life crisis need for a motorbike?). He scoured the country for a good one and we had a few grand days out till he found a lovely turquoise one which he kept and did up until he became ill and had to part with it. The only photo I actually keep on display of him is of him grinning in that Isetta.

Now, I know none of you are ever going to believe this, but hand-on-heart, it's true. I have just seen an Ariel Atom and I swear it was the Stig driving it ;D at least, the driver did have a crash helmet on, so........could have been, I suppose.

That's very cool indeed! The only time I've ever seen an Atom around here it was on a low loader.
And it could have been The Stig. It could ;D

Today, as I was driving home from work, a red Audi R8 with black side panels. Bit of a 'midlife crisis' thing going on having seen the driver

I've seen an Ariel Atom on the road on a couple of occasions, one of which was on the A4 right near where I used to live. It looks completely mad, but somehow brilliant! ;D

I've been out trucking today and yesterday, and I think this weekend must count as the start of automative Spring, because I've never seen so many amazing cars out and about, including my first Ariel Atom (though it wasn't on the move, it was parked outside a house in Garstang).
I've seen 2 Aston Martins, 3 Ferraris (one very old), a Lotus Exige, a red Audi R8 and any number of cars that made me mouth "Wow" at the driver without actually knowing what they were. I also noticed that around 70% of the cabriolets had their roofs down today, but I'm too much of a coward (temperature around 4 degrees where I was) so I kept myself warm and the top firmly up!

Bet it was the same one I saw dit. Sounds like you are in the same area as me if you're near Garstang I can't believe there are two red R8s running around here

Yeah, it had the black panels, come to think of it. I only remembered when I scrolled up the page. I saw the R8 in the middle of Lancaster on my way north - a good run up the A6 from the Blackpool turn-off, through Lancaster then up and out over the Trough of Bowland. Brilliant run!

Today we went for a big Chinese and we always see interesting cars there. Today wasn't the most thrilling (no mud-spattered Lambos this time), but after the boring grey Ferrari 360, a Rosso Corsa Ferrari 512 was much more exciting. Then a TVR Chimaera with a number plate that ended 'XXX' came past and showed the Fezzas what a sports car SHOULD sound like ;D

No, it was today (Sunday). Sounds as if the car is local, or at least staying locally. I didn't get a good look at the driver, apart from noting he was male.
The Trough was stunning today; bright blue skies with not a cloud, a fair bit of traffic with some of it interesting, lots of bikers (hi, boys!), hurling myself up and down the hills and trying not to notice how close the edge is in places, and how far down it would be before I made contact with the ground if I pushed it too far. I love it out there.

I saw Gerald's younger sister Dolly today - a light blue Triumph Dolomite Sprint came trundling up the road as I was walking back from the Post Office. She was looking a bit rough, but it put the biggest grin on my face ;D

I agree gorgeous. I saw a strange concotion in the High Street this afternoon, it was a three wheeled kit car (quite old I would guess. After much looking and deliberation, the man said it was powered by a BMW motor cycle engine. There were no names or markings on it. I saw a Caterham 7 on monday afternoon in Harrogate. It must be kit car week for me.

www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/classiccars/7398669/MGB-the-nations-favourite-classic-car.htmlThe MGB is a car that makes me smile. I can't say it's my favourite classic but it's a jaunty little zippy car and so British. Didn't like the later rubber bumpers on it at all though. This article is a good read and reminds me of the early cars we had - with bits dropping off and blowing up and Mr Crumbs getting all oily effecting repairs and patch up jobs himself with our limited budget!

I love that car, too. My dad had a 1968 F reg MGB GT when I was a kid. It was a lovely shade of dark blue, and it had the chrome trim, wooden steering wheel, wire spoke wheels etc. It was the family car for a number of years, but sadly I wasn't old enough to appreciate it properly at the time!

That sounds like a fabulous car: a classic version of a classic car- I bet your Dad (and other family members too!) loved it. A wooden steering wheel? I want one!

I think we were all pretty fond of it, and it certainly served us well. I forgot to mention before that it also had black leather upholstery, and a wooden gear knob with the MG logo on it. It was a great car.

So I drive into the school playground this morning, and one of the dinner ladies is getting out of the passenger seat of a stunning, gunmetal grey metallic Aston Martin DB7.
She must bake excellent cookies.

I should think so! What is it with academia and Aston Martins? Somebody belted through the middle of our campus this morning in a silver Aston Martin V8 Vantage!
