Wonderful, wonderful selection of cars there MF! And in a stunning and perfectly proper setting, as you say. Icing on the cake...a Veyron!! Had to laugh at the shot of the Audi advertising "tent" obscuring the view of the lovely old church...you should send that one to TG! Thanks for posting  |

Oh god, I'm jealous at you Mayfayre ...  ;D Lately I visited Tallin, and either cars are a lot cheaper in Estonia, or the country is actually rather well off ... Among all the nice but comparably ordinary Mercedeses and Porsches and white stretch limo's (white stretch Hummer limo - how tasteless is that?) I saw a Porsche Panamera, a Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe (dear God, how can a 2-door car be that huge? And how did they get a car that big through all those narrow streets?) and my first ever Aston Martin, a DB9. My friends thought I was mental when I got out of the taxi at our hotel and froze, before walking on shaky legs to go ogle the DB9.  Wish me luck - tomorrow I plan on charming/begging my way into the drivers seat of a Mercedes SLR McLaren on display in a store nearby. Not to drive of course, just to try it on for size. I bet it's just right.  (Edited for glaring typo) |

to go with the 'weather' thread - when we booked into our weekend hotel, we saw that the Alfa Owners Club had an event on that night - there were dozens of various Alfas in the car park, and we just happened to have gone down in Mrs Flats Alfa GTV!
Result
And - surprisingly - the Alfa people spread their cars out all over the car parks of the Holiday Inn! Every other club I have seen has all the cars grouped together! Maybe the average age of the drivers being 125 had something to do with that though! Maybe they just forgot where they had to park, or why they were there in th efirst place - hahaha

well - you all know of my love of all things Italian and exotic - and Alfa's? Is there ever such a thing as an ugly Ferrari? I can confirm yes there is  matt dark green, and some sort of smoked headlight glass! Awful- plain awful! |

I once saw a matt black Testarossa parked in a restaurant car park. I had to walk around it twice to confirm to myself it was really a Ferrari. They didn't always get it right.

When I had a summer job in England (Godalming, Surrey, to be precise) in 1972, I used to pass a classic car dealership every time I took the bus into Guildford. There was a bright red Ferrari Dino parked there and I used to lust after it!

Has anyone else seen a BMW X6 rolling around town. I was stuck behind one yesterday and I gotta say, the thing is a mystery to me. What the hell is it? My husband says it's a "crossover" which seems to be a polite way of saying confused. It's recognizable as a BMW but it's huge and fat. It looks puffy and blown-up. Sort of like seeing a classmate from high school you immediately recognize but they've put on 50 pounds. It's like a 3 series or 5 series coupe swallowed an SUV. The tires were the most ridiculous thing. In the next lane over to me was a 3/4 ton Suburban. I was comparing the tires on it with the BMW. Worryingly, the ones on the BMW looked the same if not even a bit fatter. Even with all this "hugeness" it didn't look like it had anymore room inside then my little Passat. Has anyone driven one or these or can they explain the point of their existence to me?  |

There are a few around here and they are truly ugly. Cross-over = half-a**ed fusion of car and SUV that serves the function of neither particularly well.

I saw a Fisker Karma convertible on Maryland 97 today. It was white and beautiful. I was alone so no picture. It eclipsed the Porsche next to me.

It was Fleetwood Transport Festival yesterday (they still call it Tram Sunday locally, even though there are very few trams since they improved the tramway system) so I took Purdey to show her off on the one day of sunshine we've had for many weeks. There were some interesting, odd and unusual vehicles, and here are just a few: A Buddhist hearse  A very elderly car, but lovely  This is an odd one from East Lancashire - the car is carrying a 'Rose Princess' who would be crowned on the town's Gala Day, and the boot/trunk is up because the little girl (aged about eight) is sitting in the boot in all her finery, waving to the crowds  I couldn't resist this, on the door of a white van  Finally, I found a Blackpool tram!  Purdey was much admired and photographed. She was parked near an E-type, and when I looked at my photos later I was reminded that people used to say the GT6 was the poor man's E-type   (She's going in to have a small oil leak checked tomorrow - I just hope it's not going to turn out expensive!) |

So..improving the Blackpool tram system has entailed removing all the trams? Well, for a couple of years they were busy rebuilding the system, so there were no trams at all. All the rails were ripped up and replaced, but the process was held up a few times as rotten thieving barstewards kept nicking the new rails and cabling while it was waiting to be laid. Now we have a lovely new shiny system with modern trams, though they don't have the same charisma as the old ones. The new rails will take the old trams, but they're going to be designated 'heritage' and brought out on special occasions. I think the new trams are a bit too wide to go down the main street for the festival, as many of the cars on display are parked sideways to fit them in. There was one solitary new tram there, but it just seemed to be going up and down about 100 yards at one end of the main street, rather than risking it any further! |
