Does anybody really know what his beef is with them. I know Jeremy mentions Agincourt. It's the French and the Germans fighting over Alsace Lorraine. They are our traditional 'rivals' - it's not meant bitterly, but since before Agincourt there have been power struggles between England and France. Agincourt did really clobber Anglo-French relations however. Even when Henry VIII and Francis I decided to come together for a tournament in 1520 (at The Field of Cloth of Gold), what was supposed to be a joint display of wealth, power and athleticism ended up with Henry challenging Francis to a wrestling match (Francis won)! Personally, I think it's time for our nations to demand a rematch. Obviously France is a republic these days, but I'm sure if the Queen challenged Nicolas Sarkozy to a wrestling match, there would be a great deal of interest. We mock the French for their (perceived) arrogance, weird eating habits, reputation as shaggers, poor personal hygiene, manic driving and love of garlic and berets; they mock us for our (perceived) poor diet, romantic and sexual incompetence, lack of style, general coarseness and our poor personal hygiene. We call them 'frogs', they call us 'les rosbifs', both on the basis of our eating habits. It's not so much a James thing as an ingrained Anglo-French thing. We only do it because they're better at a lot of things than we are. On the other hand, they're responsible for the revolting Peugeot in which I was forced to take my driving test* (let's ignore the fact that the Vauxhall I should have been driving broke down the week before), and that is absolutely the worst car I have ever driven, with a face like a toothless idiot and a ride like a lead-lined blancmange (which is another French word, you'll note). So they deserve it. *I passed.

You've got a 'keeper' there, XJS! I went to Paris last September, in fact I was on the Eurostar when Jacqui was getting a book signed for me, and James was so displeased that he even sent me a message. Paris is quite magical. If you've not been before there are many things to enchant, but the two I remember most are the night-time trip to watch the Eiffel Tower shimmer on the hour, and the bridge over the Seine with the lovers' padlocks. www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/lovelocks-return-to-the-bridges-of-paris-2293506.htmlI'm sure you'll have a lovely, romantic time. I've been to Paris before, about sixteen years ago, but my OH has never been there, so it'll be a whole new experience for him. I'm really looking forward to going again, as I loved it when I was there before. We've been considering going there for a while, but it was all finally booked and confirmed last night. My OH says that one of the things on the 'to do' list for his life is to take a girlfriend to Paris, which I think is rather nice. Well, he'll be able to cross it off the list in September! ;D Thanks for all the good wishes, folks. Dit, what a great message from James! ;D

I love English and French history and almost minored in it. I plan to go back to Versailles, especially for the Hall of Mirrors. Back in LouisIV time it stunk to high heaven ergo so much perfume. Didn't the French invent the bidet? I remember it being said years ago that British food was terrible. I know that has changed. I love french desserts. Is there a certain pub I should go to in London?

Thank goodness! I have a job!
I start on Monday as an 'on-board host' on trains. I will not be throwing bananas at people in scum class or swearing at people over the intercom, but I will be working for the same people as our own XJSarah ;D
It's not perhaps quite what I saw myself doing when I graduated, but it's better than the alternative!

These particular EMT services run between London St. Pancras and Corby, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield.
I rather like being based at St. Pancras, because it is, quite frankly, one of the finest railway stations ever built. IMHO, anyway! ;D

Thank you everyone I have to admit, I'm hoping to have a look around St Pancras (no, XJ, not just the Paperchase!) at some point, because it's an incredible building. I'm just massively relieved to have something to do again!

I got to see inside the old hotel building there a few years back, when I was delivering some stuff for an art exhibition. It's awesome!

YAY Wy! Now I definately have to a trip to Sheffs or Leicester, as there's double the chance of being able to be the awkward customer of the day ;D I got to see inside the old hotel building there a few years back, when I was delivering some stuff for an art exhibition. It's awesome! I went (twice!) for a tour of the hotel before it was rebuilt. It was pretty damn good, especially the double winding staircase towards the rear of the building. I'd love to go round it now it's been restored, but I suspect I may well have to pay a not-small fortune for a room there first.

From what I know about it, it is not a nice procedure to go through.

It is very good news indeed, dialysis is no box of treats, so, long may your kidneys reign (and keep functioning.)

I AM EMPLOYED! Part-time, seasonal, temporary, minimum-wage, but DAMN IT I AM EMPLOYED! SOME MONEY. Oh. 25% employee discount. Employed at Michael's. For those who don't know, major craft/art supply store chain in the states. My paycheck may not make it out of the store. I may weep. With joy this time.
