Well, I heard it and that comment did elicit a sharp intake of breath from me; I knew he'd upset people. However. 188 complaints out of 7m before it gets into the papers. Where did the rest come from? Had they seen the programme when it went out? Did they have to wait till they got to work to complain as they don't have a computer at home? did they all watch it after the mention in the papers? Did they not know how to complain till the papers told them? Or did they not want to complain till... Or do they all work for.... Conspiracy theory ahoy?? or is it just me?

Lew: They're stoopid ;D Hypnobird: I have to admit, I didn't even think anything of the comment, I just cracked up laughing. It wasn't until I saw it on the news that I thought into it a bit more. But then I've got a crude sense of humour. The conspiracy theory sounds about right

I'm hoping there will shortly be an attack of common sense. The BBC have pulled the story from the front page of their entertainment section, and the latest version states that although there have been 517 complaints, only 188 were made before the episode was reported in the news, so I think they're aware that the reporting has had an effect on the way people have reacted. Also, the lady at the centre of 'BrandGate' has come out in defence of Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross, apologised for over-reacting and stated that the reaction has been out of all proportion, so fingers crossed people will feel much the same about Jeremy's comments when the dust settles. I actually phoned OFCOM last night because I was concerned that it all seems to be going a bit mad in the light of events last week, and they seem well aware that reporting these things makes it worse. I also emailed the BBC pointing this out. I didn't want to come across as a squealing fangirl, but it seems they do understand the role that reporting has played in making these things blow up to the extent they have, based on the latest version of the story (which is still on the website, just not plastered on the front page). I don't imagine I'll get a response, but I felt I needed to do what little I could to redress the balance. Maybe if those of us who enjoyed the show and weren't offended were to write in, it might put things back in perspective a bit The thing is, people only tend to react when they're unhappy about something, though the ratings should tell the BBC that people in the main weren't outraged enough to pick up a phone or fire off an email. Even so, I wanted to tell them I was happy.

BREAKING NEWS: In a shock move, common sense breaks out at Ofcom! news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7771497.stmApparently, Ofcom ruled Clarkson "was clearly using exaggeration to make a joke". According to the BBC News website, "Ofcom did not believe the intention of the comments could be seen to imply that all lorry drivers murder prostitutes, nor would it be reasonable to make such an inference," the watchdog said.
"In Ofcom's view, the presenter was clearly using exaggeration to make a joke, albeit not to everyone's taste. The comments should therefore be seen in that context."
Ofcom added it considered the majority of the audience would have understood Clarkson's comments as being made for comic effect, and were in keeping with what would normally be expected from him on the show.
This leaves the way clear for the outraged members of the Morris Marina Owner's Club to complain about the 'Commie Cars' segment
