That did surpise me, just like it did with Heat's Weird Crush award. How hard can it be to make a poll where you can only vote once? The Heat thing is a bit of a joke, but this Maxim thing looks like a serious matter. You can vote in loads of categories, including best car, best gadget etc. |

How hard can it be to make a poll where you can only vote once? It's really not. I can think of at least two ways of doing it off the top of my head, either by setting it up so that a vote can only be accepted once from any given ip address, or by the use of cookies. Given how common cookies are, and how easy to implement, if they haven't bothered then they have to accept these things may be open to multiple voting. Put it this way, it doesn't need a big fanbase movement to do this. Say the Ssangyong Rodius somehow made it into the shortlist for car of the year. Most sane people would ignore it and vote for something that wasn't completely horrid, but imagine in a basement somewhere there's a chap who maybe loves his Rodius just a little bit too much. All it would need is for him to spend a couple of hours repeatedly clicking and refreshing and before you know it, Maxim are compelled to award 'Car of the Year' to a Ssangyong. Which would be awful. So if they decide to nullify the vote in any given category, unless they are going to trawl all their ip logs and discount all but the first vote for everything, the honourable thing would be to nullify everything and start again with appropriate constraints in place. It's their own fault, really  |
