The sheer volume of comments can be a bit overwhelming, I agree, but personally I don't have a problem with any of the chatterers themselves. From what they say, I think they're all genuine admirers of James and his work, and they usually give me something interesting to research or think about, on top of the stuff that James himself has said. I have no doubt about that, ambergris, and I agree that many of the comments are witty and interesting. Regarding the volume of comments, perhaps to depersonalise it a bit, if any group of close friends spend a great deal of time talking together it can be a bit daunting for anyone else to try and join in the conversation, so I've limited my comments on the DT to ones that are directly in response to the column, or points James makes when he puts a comment there himself, rather than try to get involved in the 'banter' I agree about the trolls, though!

Ugh, trolls. I've been dealing with more than my fair share of trolls on Twitter lately. I usually block them and that's the end of it. I figure I don't owe a response or an explanation of my views to anyone who first addresses me as a f****ng anything. I've said I'll read what they have to say and take it into consideration if they can manage some good manners, but that has yet to happen. Trolls do serve one purpose though. I can take comfort that my life hasn't sunk so low that I take pleasure in making other people angry and miserable.

There's a rumour, courtesy of a Final Gear member who met James at TG filming, that the Telegraph column may be reinstated in the next few weeks.
Lucky he wasn't taking a break from News of the World...

There's a rumour, courtesy of a Final Gear member who met James at TG filming, that the Telegraph column may be reinstated in the next few weeks. Lucky he wasn't taking a break from News of the World... More than a rumour. FinalGear member MWF spoke to James and asked him when we can expect to see fresh Telegraph columns. James told him they very likely wanted him to start writing stuff again in the next 3-4 weeks.

Idle curiosity - I wonder whether James asked for a break, or the DT suggested that he should take one (for their own financial/contractural reasons)?

Not sure. What was in the actual newspaper all these weeks in the space where normally James' column was? Not an old column likely. Was there another column or editiorial feature that will now stop?

Idle curiosity - I wonder whether James asked for a break, or the DT suggested that he should take one (for their own financial/contractural reasons)? If I was a bettin' man, I'd guess James wanted the break. The final straw might have been having to dash out a column on a plane (in business class, of course) a couple of days before his deadline. He stopped writing shortly after the the Houston "incident" (as reported in that great organ of record, the News of the World, if I remember rightly). If the DT wanted to pay him less money, I would've thought they could change the column to fortnightly or monthly. Must be tough to come up with ideas every week with so much else making demands on your time.

Ah yes the Houston incident - was his phone hijacked to find out what he really thought of that debacle i wonder ? I agree a break or sabatical is most likely to concentrate on other things. He has been a very busy bunny lately, Trains/ Man Lab/ TG filming and TG Live ran up to March. It'll be good to have him back though - not that the oldies are brilliant reading.... it just makes me feel old ;D

Go on plunge i dare you ....before the usual suspects start .... oh lets not go there again ;D scuttles off to make a cuppa to drink whilst reading another masterpiece ;D But you did go there. Try in the future to not cause trouble among James May fans. We're supposed to be a nice community - nice like James himself. Think about that the next time you wish to voice an opinion that really doesn't matter but can hurt someone else.

Mentioning the usual suspects was just a jab that made you feel better and appear to be witty. It’s ok because you’re entitled to your opinion regardless of how that affects the usual suspects. What does that have to do with following James May’s work? Really. Tell me. Did it ever dawn on you to simply say “Go on plunge i dare you .... scuttles off to make a cuppa to drink whilst reading another masterpiece”? It sounds good. In fact it sounds nicer. You could have also added to have fun while taking the plunge.

To helium - I am totally baffled by your comment.
"But you did go there" - this sounds as if in some way I shouldn't have. I made the remark that there was a new/old column up and no-one had so far commented on it. Bearing in mind that previous columns have attracted hundreds of comments, I thought it was worth noting that for once I was there first. I post there occasionally myself, but I felt I had nothing in particular to respond with ('good column' seems trite) so I didn't.
"Try in the future to not cause trouble among James May fans" Amongst which James May fans am I causing trouble? Not here, I suspect. So are you referring to the DT community? If so, you must consider them (or is that 'yourselves?) to be remarkably thin-skinned, to consider the comments here as causing trouble.
"We're supposed to be a nice community - nice like James himself". Actually we are, and as Jacqui has said (above), perhaps you should actually have a look around the JMB before passing comment. It might be worth you knowing that James himself has often spoken to individual members of the JMB with a certain degree of affection. He thinks we're mad for our interest in him, typically self-effacing of the gentleman, but smiles when he says it. He certainly did when he said it to me.
"Think about that the next time you wish to voice an opinion that really doesn't matter but can hurt someone else." Who exactly is hurt here? I'll freely admit that my opinion isn't worth a bean, but I have the right to express it, especially as there is nothing in it that is intended to hurt, nor could.
If by any chance this is all to do with the reference to the "usual suspects", well everyone reading the DT will know that the vast majority of the comments are made by a smal group of people, and there has been some criticism because of that, even on DT. That's not an opinion, that's a fact. Doesn't alter anything. "The usual suspects" is a common phrase used to describe a regular group of people, as in, "Who was in the pub last night?" "Oh, just the usual suspects." Perhaps you're not from the UK and don't know that.
So, where would you be coming from? I'd really like to know.
(And by the way, I think you'll find people will respond to you more readily if you don't give them instructions i.e. 'Try in the future'/'Think about that the next time'.)

I have had a long look at the James May community on the internet. Since everyone is entitled to their opinion I'm voicing mine as constructive criticism in order to bring out nicer things in people. If you want to get your nose in a snit the minute someone challenges your point of view and are not willing to listen to suggestions that could be nicer to all who read that is your preogative and illustrates my point nicely.

There have been plenty of snidey comments made over on the DT - without any trace of irony - about "saddos" who post on forums, so if you can't take it, don't dish it out. Which one are you, by the way?

I'll tell if you do. How do you arrive at my ability to take it? I'm not upset. I'm suggesting a need for niceties and hostility brews. I'm astounded. See what happens when someone asks for people to think before they type and try to be nicer? If I were actually conducting a social experiment, I'd win the Nobel Peace Prize for getting people to spill their guts just by asking them to be nice. The last person that tried to throw a brick at me wrote a novel.

As a moderator of this community I'm going to ask you nicely to please stop being intentionally inflammatory, because you have quite obviously chosen to make comments that you know will only cause friction. I'm not saying that you are doing so intentionally, but this looks like trolling and it's incredibly unhelpful. What I would suggest you do, if you are interested in being a part of this particular corner of the James May community, is that you take yourself out of this thread, familiarise yourself with the posting guidelines and take the time to introduce yourself properly and get to know the members of the board. If you are not interested in doing so, or have come here from the DT with the intention of causing trouble, please desist. I am going to temporarily lock this thread (any of the mod/admin team can unlock it in the morning, but I want to go to bed and I don't want to wake up to more of this nonsense). Those of us who run this site do so as it brings us pleasure, not because we like sorting out squabbles for a pastime.

Oops one of whomever has a lot of air, no matter ;D
Unlocked, shame actually I'm not on the moderating at the DT
Still rather sad when one joins only to throw their toys, so tasteless and sad.
No doubt, they'll all be rushing on the DT (or anywhere else for that matter, where do you have the time? ) to have a dig, dig away just make sure it's interesting. ;D
Now to do what most people do who have a life, work

Well I can't wait for new columns from James. To be honest, I think they illustrate how intelligent and humourous he really is. I still wish he would let that side of him show more - especially the musical side.
On an aside - anyone want a wood framed piano? Only joking - I'll probably ebay it in the hope the buyer collects. We're getting Dad's piano, which is lovely. Maybe I should invest in lessons.

It's worth the lessons, crumbs, it's a skill that never leaves you. I'm sans piano at the moment - well, not actually without, it's in the far corner of what was the study and is now (literally) the box room, and I can't get to it until I've organised a bit of car-booting to create access! I'm looking forward to getting back to a little light fluttering across the keys.

I started to learn to play when I was six, and as Dit says, it's a skill, a bit like swimming, you never forget. I fell out a bit with the piano in my teens, but did return to it, and still love playing. My one regret is I sold my piano to buy a Clavinola, the touch of the keys is totally alien to a piano, and needless to say, I want my piano back.

Also on BBC2 now - a young concert pianist, don't know his name but he's only a boy; his touch and musicianship are quite exceptional.
