I don't think I'll see any of those where I live. I do like that slogan though. I know it is a James thing, but what is the history behind it? Is there a story I can read anywhere?

There is actually a connection with Barter Books in Alnwick, Northumberland. They are a secondhand bookshop with a big list of trains, transport, and wouldn't you just guess, aviation titles. I wanted one of these posters for my kitchen long before James got his T-shirt. He's just copying me. According to Barter Books' ad in the Ffestiniog railway society mag  OK, I know, I know... : " Barter Books co-owner, Stuart Manley, was emptying a box of antiquarian books just purchased for auction when he spotted an old poster lining the bottom of the box. He correctly guessed it was a World War 2 poster but he had never seen one like this before. He showed it to his wife, Mary, and they liked it so much they framed it and hung it behind the counter in the bookshop. The poster quickly proved so popular with customers that in 2001 Stuart and mary decided to commission a facsimile edition of the poster which has now sold in its thousands and has inspired the shop to produce other popular Keep Calm products. Research into the history of the original poster revealed a fascinating story going back to the country's darkest hours... In Spring 1939, with war in Germany all but inevitable, the Ministry of Information commissioned a series of propaganda posters to offer the public reassurance. The first two became well known. Using the crown as the only graphic device to symbolise a message from the King to his people, the stark red and white posters stated "Freedom is in Peril", and "Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution, Will Bring Us Victory" They immediately began to appear on hoardings, shop windows and railway platforms all over the country, but a further poster, of which 2.5 million were printed, was held in reserve. This poster was to be the final urging from the King to Keep Calm and Carry On, and was to be used if the most drastic situation developed such as mass gas attacks or invasion. Happily, neither of these catastrophes occurred and so the public were never to see the poster. But one or two officials must have hung on to them. We only know of one other in existence besides our copy... several years ago builders broke into a disused bank vault and found a ripped copy on the wall. So far as we know, our is the only intact original left of those 2.5 million copies printed." Fascinating, I think. Union Jack bunting is the best  .......loves it, loves it oh and cushions and Emma Bridgewater do a good line in union jack china oops sorry  ;D.....anyway Keep Calm and Carry On ;D And that poster is in the bag......or will be on my wall when it arrives.. ;D |

I have got a Union Jack mug, I bought it for £2.50 at a local re-enactment/parade here in the local town centre a couple of years ago. I love it! I have flags too, not bunting ones though, I can never find anywhere here that sells that!!!! I would love some though. And some of our own Ulster flag too. |

There used to be a stenciled copy of the "Keep Calm" poster on the outside wall of my local Abbey Bank.It always made me smile until the bank painted it out.  |

I saw the shirts being offered for sale in the BBC America Shop's catalogue. $25 plus shipping, but the shirts were in at least five colors and a decent number of sizes.
(I assume based on the fact I ordered The Big Book of Top Gear from them I got the catalogue. A lot of neat stuff in there, BTW....I so want a "Mind the Gap" floormat!)

A stamp company called "Rubber Soul" has put out a rubber stamp and a set of "buttons" with the "Keep Calm" motto. You can check your local crafty store or order them online. I was walking to the local dene with a few friends the other day and a biker (with a rubicund complexion and startling blue eyes, I may add!  ) beeped, nodded, stuck his thumb up and grinned at my  shirt. FINALLY someone got the joke *heavy sigh* Sadly, that made my day more than the 20 mile ramble through the beatific countryside. |
