I remember in Girl Scouts we had to learn different songs from other countries. One was about the kookaburras. "Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree, etc." Familiar to anyone!

Oh yes, I remember this song well, it's usually sung as a round. On the subject of feeding birds, I've just topped up the seed and fat ball feeders - bad weather is supposed to be on the way.

We get hummingbirds up to camp, rx7. They have fights over who gets to sit and drink at the feeder. One of them camps out on a limb just above the feeder and watches for rivals. The cat I had when I was still living at home once caught a hummingbird. He didn't kill it, just brought it back to the house. I took it from him, and it lay in my palm for a few seconds. Then he tested his wings and off he went. Amazing little creatures. ;D

Got the chance to get a couple pictures of a Blue Jay today! ;D And here he is with a couple of friends. The poor little guy on the right had a bit of a stumble. The wind picked up just after I took the photo. It blew his tail up, then ruffled his under feathers, before it tipped him over completely! He looked like those plastic birds that keep dipping their beaks into a glass of water! ;D

They are beautiful. I wanted to use the flash on my camera. The blue would have come out better, but I was shooting through a window.

I don't know whether it's got something to do with light conditions at this time of year, but birds (mainly collar doves) keep flying into the big window that forms the wall at the back of my living room. It's happening so often at the moment that the cats and I barely raise our heads.
I always go over, expecting to to see little unconscious birdies on the terrace floor, but they've always flown away, so I can only assume that the sound is far worse than the effect. I sometimes get the equivalent of snow-angels on the glass, though.

Egads, birds and windows When I was still living with Mum, we had a massive indoor aviary with finches - mostly zebras, and a couple of fire finches and cordon bleus. Every single ruddy time one of them got out of the cage, it would, without fail, turn left, fly through the hall, into the lounge and *crunch* into the big window there. Many's the time I had to go in and pick up a dazed bird from the windowsill. It makes me wonder if birds get a little circle of very tiny birds dancing round their heads when they whack their heads on things ;D

I was trying to get a picture of the peacocks and peahens fanning the crows on my garden table. Not much food, they wanted the water. Of course when I went to take the pictures the crows had gone and they weren't fanning anymore.

Or perhaps they see a circle of little humans Morris dancing. Oh, and another bird walloped into the window this morning, this time loud enough even to raise the interest of one of the cats but again, nothing there to see.

I had a ring necked pheasant wander in the middle of the road yesterday. I like them and I was saying, "Keep running little birdie! I don't want to hit you!" First one I've ever seen. I can't wait for my hummingbirds to come back! They get downright violent when they protect their "bar" from intruders though, it can get impressive.

Had the cardinal squawking today! We call him Cardinal Richelieu after the bad guy in the 3 Musketeers. My dog was chasing wild turkeys as well. Waiting for May for our hummingbirds! They'll buzz me if I'm outside and wearing a bright color-letting me know that they want their bar back up!
