\delurk
Something recently is making me feel even more infatuated with Mr. May and Mr. Clarkson than usual. Maybe delurking here will help get things out of my system. Honestly, this whole celebrity infatuation/crush thing makes me uncomfortable. What must they think of us?
I once went to a screening for a the TV show House. We watched an episode that hadn't made it to TV yet, then the cast came on stage an the audience could ask questions. People would get up and start with "Oh, Mr. Laurie, I just love you..." which, however true that was, obviously made Hugh Laurie uncomfortable, and damn it made me feel just so...embarassed...to be in the throng of fans.
So now I find myself completely obsessed with May and Clarkson. I have random ideas of flying to the UK to try to get to a TG filming. But that would just put me back among the crowd of the adoring fans, and I know I'm not comfortable there.
So here I am, giving virtual-fandom a try.
I'm in the US. From California, but now in Colorado, and sometimes in Wyoming and sometimes Alaska. I'm mid-30's, unhappily married (but lacking a spine), no kids, 1 cat. I travel around with a portable hard drive with all the TG episodes on it, as well as a bunch of Clarkson movies, and James' big gay wine program. Of all the people I know, maybe 5 watch British TopGear.
I'm on my 4th Jeep Grand Cherokee. I only get one vehicle that has to survive commuting, camping, skiing, rain, snow, mud, and runs to the pub -- so it has got to be an SUV. If I could afford a Range Rover, I'd have that. Someday want to add a small car for fun, like a Fiat 500 Abarth or a Ford Focus ST, or a Mazda 3. If price was no object I'd have a Lamborghini Aventador in outrageous orange.
Also have bikes. Currently a 600cc sportbike for track days, and a smallish dual-sport that I fall off of. A lot. Hate that thing really.
Probably I'm a gear head by girl standards, but I don't enjoy wrenching on things so much. I know how to change oil on the truck and the bikes, and I know how to do all the things to track-prep the bike, but honestly, I work so much that when I'm home I'd really just rather ride the damn thing, not work on it.
I enjoy the outdoors, but only hike when I'm being paid to do it. Shooting, fishing, and just lounging about drinking beer outside are preferable. Can do pratical things like start a campfire with a cell phone battery, change a tire alone, and tie a bolen knot. Can do impractical things like paint and take photos.

Welcome, McKennitt. There are many other ladies here who feel the same about James (some will admit to a crush on Jezza also) as well as a few girl gearheads. You're in good company.

Is it sad that I'm happy to have an American member who's not from either of the coasts? (love all you east and west coasters though ) The landlocked bunch of US mayhemers don't seem to be as well represented here though. I'm in Wisconsin's second largest city btw, welcome! Plus I also paint and am into photography. So what if it's non-practical, still fun.

More than half of the US population lives within 50 miles of a coast (NOAA Stats., 2008.) A little over 12% of the US pop. lives in California alone (US Census Bureau, 2011). So, if you play the percentages...ya know *shrugs*.

Hi mckennitt! Good on you for delurking ;D although... Maybe delurking here will help get things out of my system. I've tried. It doesn't work. ;D It only makes things worse (or better, depending on which way you look at it).

So, if you play the percentages...ya know *shrugs*. Wow! I didn't know that! I sort of imagined that America was just full all the way across (just shows how ignorant I am!) It's so long since I delurked that I can't actually remember what life was like before - genuinely - and I can honestly say that being here has had a real impact on me. Welcome to all newbies!

And I'm sure you weren't even trying. When I read the above line, I had this picture in my mind of a map of the U.S. with millions and millions of little dots across the whole thing representing all the people. ;D ;D ;D This is what the distribution actually looks like: (each dot = 7500 people) Welcome mckennitt! I agree with Pie, delurking only makes the infatuation worse. Or better. Just go with the madness! ;D ;D

That's a better answer than I was about to supply DMC. Mostly because it comes with the nice 12 years out of date map. Don't think the population distributions have changed enough to make much of a difference though. Yeah, there's a reason that a good chunk is called 'flyover country.' Because there's nothing and nobody there. Okay, that's not really true. There's lots of massive, massive farms in the Plains. I've driven across Iowa and Nebraska before, an opportunity I highly advise all of you to pass up given the chance, and it's really just one massive corn or wheat field. The midwest looks a bit more populated than I thought it would be, and I do live very near one of those massive bright white dots(I'm very close to Chicagoland). But yes, most of the people live near a coast, and the Great Lakes coasts don't count. Still, with over half the population living near a coast, that does leave a good chunk of us NOT near the coasts. Represent! Oh I am in a doofy mood this morning. I blame the anti-nausea meds.

NOAA stats. count all coastlines. So the great lakes states are counted too even if they just barely touch the water. As would the Alaskan and Hawaiian coasts. "There are 30 coastal states in the United States containing a total of 673 coastal counties, boroughs, parishes, or county equivalents." (NOAA, 2008). Hey, easy on dissing those wonderful farmlands. Those life giving open lands are my point of origin. Love the Mid-West. Good people. Enough nerdiness for the day. Hope the anti-nausea drugs are useful, Meimi.

Just not the Grain Belt parts. I'm in dairy farm land. I love the midwest too. Not that I'm a lifelong native here or anything (oh wait). The nausea meds are making me want to pass out something fierce and it's nearly time for me to start heading to the bus stop.

Hello,
Hi, I'm Melissa, 27 years and live in Belgium. I'm already looking a few years to Top Gear, along with my husband, and the reason why i like James is because he's a real man if you ask me. I love the fact that he stay's the same and doesn't care what other people think about him (or his clothes). He just make's me smile.

Welcome Melly! Have fun here. You must love Top Gear.....don't they make fun of Belgium quite often??!!! Oh i have a good sense of humor so i laugh with them I think this has to be true of most of the non English fans. I know that usually, when Jeremy makes fun of Americans (usually calling us fat, stupid, and obnoxious) I don't laugh so much as shake my head and sadly admit that, yes, for the most part, that is true. As Hammond is really a secret American, I suspect that I am really, somehow, a secret Brit. ;D
