This ad is so very James, mildly annoying and endearing at the same time...

Guess what arrived in the post today?? James!! ;D ;D ;D Well, sort of... I signed up for the Fuller's Fine Ale Club on their website so I could see the magazine First Draught because it was featuring James. Of course, they didn't have it up on the website yet. Oh well. But then the magazine and a Fuller's Fine Ale Club membership card arrived today! ;D I didn't expect this at all! ;D

When I saw the Par Avion sticker on the envelope, I assumed it was from Current Archaeology asking me to renew my subscription. It comes in the same kind of envelope. Glad I didn't throw it away! ;D ;D

New column is up on Facebook! What actually makes a great pub? December 2010 IT'S EASY TO pick on trivia. The beer is important, clearly, but not enough in itself, because I can drink good beer at home quite happily. I like a game of arrows now and then, certainly. I like a fire in the winter, and a garden in the spring; fortifying food on Sunday afternoons, an England match on the big screen (but not a soap) and the comforting burble of the sort of debate that only beer can properly fuel. And I'm not periodist about my pubs. Ancient ones offer the mystique of bar tops patinated by the passing of pints to people long gone, and modern ones sharpen the senses with their considered austerity and confirm that communal beer drinking is a living tradition that is evolving along with everything else, which gives me hope. All these things are important. But ever since I was old enough to look as if I was allowed into pubs, I've known that a great one depends entirely on its proprietor. IT'S AMAZING WHAT an enduring truism this is. Obviously, a conscientious new landlord will look after his cellar, put new flights on the pub darts, screw the wonky bits of furniture back together and so on. But even if the incoming boss appears to do absolutely nothing, the character of a pub will still be utterly transformed. I've known lovely warm and welcoming locals, where a cheer awaits in the glass and man is joined in unqualified unison with his brethren, transformed into miserable fleapits of ill humour, and vice versa, even though the only thing that seemed to change was the name over the door. But then, pubs are spiritual places that defy over-analysis, and their ministers are guardians of an important facet of the human condition. We are merely the flock. A great pub, then, is one where you feel as if you belong. Even if you've never been there before.

Thank you so much for passing this on, Lindenchase.
I loved his comment, "ever since I was old enough to look as if I was allowed into pubs", as it suggests that part of life when going into a pub - and getting away with it - is still a great adventure.

I love the fact that he's a proper pianist. Even from the little I've seen, I know music teachers who have less musicality and technique.

a great one depends entirely on its proprietor. A great pub, then, is one where you feel as if you belong. Even if you've never been there before. My late Dad (pub landlord of 30 years) would totally agree with these comments, he would often say a good pub is only as good as its landlord And as for being looking old enough to be in a pub - my Dad had serverd this bloke for best part of 2 years, then one night he came in and said all drinks were on him - why.... it was his 18th birthday, all my Dad could do was laugh and serve the now legal drinker his 'regular' evening pint...on the landlord ;D

Thanks to all of you for sharing all of this! I'm also non-FB'd, and so very much appreciate the "making of" link.
Am I right, then, in supposing that the "Leave it" and water pistol ad(s) are not yet out? Figure that since I'm not seeing them here or on YouTube, they must be the "reserve" ads the gent spoke of in the "making of" vid.

I can't understand why anyone would find James's ads annoying. The Redknapp's Thomas Cook one however. Ugghh.
