jacqui said: Lager and light beers are served cold, cider cold, real ale and dark beers room temp - or as my Dad used to say barrel temp (and that good old fasioned wooden barrels) That makes sense. d-m-c said: My family had a friend from Scotland that would visit periodically over here. She always claimed real ale should be at cellar temperature, because that's where the barrels were kept. So would that be about 50F/10C or so?Yes, cellar temp. An old friend and I used to make beer, it was fun, but after a while it was easier to just buy beer....lol. And I'm glad to hear that some things are served cold over there, cuz I've heard too many stories of warm beer. My hubby used to work with a guy who came over here from England (he's the one who turned me on to Top Gear), and he always hated stouts served cold. That makes perfect sense now. I personally love any beer served ice cold, but I do remember as a stout's temp rose, it tasted better - and that's a winter time drink. I still think ale tastes better cold, if it came from a microbrewry. Draft ale is much better than bottled. Light beer have to be ice cold cuz they have no taste. I'll drink lager everyday of the year though My new fascination is Samuel Smith's Organically Produced Ales and Lagers. Expensive but I don't care. My all time favorite is draft Yuengling. I'd drink that for breakfast every morning if I could get away with it....lol! And we have a brand over here named "Victory" beer, comes in several varieties. Some with extremely high alcohol content, in small print....lol. Holy, there's one call "Golden Monkey", holy crap that s--t knocked me on my ass after 3 bottles. victorybeer.com/beers/ [take a look, the graphics are cool too - and all of their beers are extremely intoxicating - in every way you can imagine] I'd love to see James knock back few Golden Monkeys....[evil laugh] Thanks for answering my question!!!!

Good to see that over the pond, there too is good beer. Liked the web site. Over the years it's getting to be a good place (UK) for the proper brewed stuff, even in dear olde Essex ;D Not that I drink much of it, usually I taste everyone else's drinks.....funny how I'm flat on my back later on in the evening ;D

I've had many an ale that tasted better as it warmed up. When we go out, the restaurants always serve any type of beer ice cold. A lot of times, we don't start drinking them until we're halfway through our dinner! Old Speckled Hen is one that really should be cellar temp. It tastes like (forgive this) what I imagine cat pi$$ would taste like if it were served cold and frothy! But after it comes up a few degrees, it's marvelous. ;D ;D Shipyard Brewery, here in Maine makes some wonderful brews. www.shipyard.com/They even had a brewer from Old Thumper in England come over to show them how the process to make it was done. Now they also make a Double Old Thumper. Packs a definite punch! ;D ;D Smashed Blueberry Ale coming available in May! Can't wait!! ;D ;D They already make a Smashed Pumpkin! Samuel Smith's is fantastic... when I can find it. I have to travel over two hours to get to a shop that carries it!

lol.... lew: yeah I used to drink a little of everyone else's drink too when I was younger. It's how I acquired a taste for manhattan's @d-m-c: Smashed Blueberry Ale sounds awesome! I love anything with blueberry in it. I've heard of Old Thumper but never had the pleasure. And I will have to try an ale warmer. But like you said, you don't drink until halfway through dinner, we're the complete opposite - we'll be on our second or third cold beer by halfway through dinner...lol! But I will give it a try. And eeewwww, I've had beer that tasted like somekind of pi$$. I don't wait for the temp to change on spirits like that. Speaking of flavored spirits, we have a winery hear us that makes an apple cinnamon wine, and a peach cobbler wine - and a pumpkin spice wine for the holidays.

Shipyard makes a Pumpkinhead ale that I buy by the 48-case. Fabulous! You can really taste the cinnamon spicing it up! The Smashed Pumpkin is a kicked up version! Sea Dog Brewing Company www.seadogbrewing.com/ makes a brilliant Blueberry ale - Blue Paw. I buy that year round! ;D

We're discussing beer. I can't stay away. We've got a lot of decent small breweries in Wisconsin too...and some crappy large ones (Miller, I'm looking at you). My personal favorite to this day is New Glarus Brewing Company who sadly do not sell outside the state. Spotted Cow is their main beer and also my favorite, but their Apple Ale which they make whenever the mood strikes them is PHENOMENALLY good. And I tend to use most apple beers for making pancakes rather than drinking. Re: the temp thing...I do let my Spotted Cows warm up a bit before I start drinking them, they do taste better when warmer than fridge temp. Ales are my favorite, I tend to like most other kinds of beer. IPAs are hit and miss with me. I'm not a huge fan of stout as a general rule but the only one I seem to truly detest is Guinness. I've noticed that I can't really drink cheap mass-produced lager anymore. Someone gave me a PBR at a party a few months ago and it was the most tasteless watered-down disgusting thing ever. In my fridge right now....Horny Goat(that is the name of the brewery, with equally creative beer names...like...you know what, just google them if you're curious, I don't wanna get in trouble ) and Lakefront Brewery, both mixed packs. Had the Lakefront ESB last night, that was tasty.

PBR is an abomination! Ranks right up there with Schlitz! Agreed. You ever have Blatz? Because DON'T! The Labatt tasted gross to me too, and I used to kinda like that one a bit, but the boys did say that the keg might've skunked out. My husband lost a drinking game and had to drink that pitcher though...oh well. He played it.

Oh wow, you wonderful ladies have fine taste in beer! Makes me wanna start making my own beer again, and start infusing flavors. I made raspberry vodka last year [sooooooo gooooood], I still have about two shots of it left in the freezer. I can't bear to drink it because it will be gone. It took a while to get it right. I'll drink it when I make more. @ d-m-c: That Sea Dog Brewing Co website had me drooling!!!! meimichan: But a Guiness bottle is so much fun to open...lol! You have to try different stouts, they're all different. Storm King by Victory is the best I've had so far. I used to buy it by the case in the winter. Anyone ever try Iron City Beer [from Pittsburgh, PA]? That'll put some hair on your chest!!!!! OH YEAH.....how is London Pride beer?

London Pride is very good. I like the ESB as well. I've not tried the London Porter because MOH doesn't have that many left and isn't willing to part with one. Those are the only varieties I can buy here. ;D
Maybe we should have a Beer Thread?

[and where should we post a beer thread?] I could talk about beer all day/week/year long!!!!!
And thanks for the head's up on London Pride, and I believe (according to the website) I can get the London Porter here in America.

I cannot find London Pride or anything by Fuller's in any of the shops in town. I think they'd rather push all the local beers instead. Which I can understand, but still....I wanna try one!

With the exception of Yuengling Lager or Samuel Adams, I can't drink mass produced beers either. And neither of those is really mass produced. They really are smaller breweries. But things like Miller and Bud are just tasteless! Why bother to consume all those calories when you may just as well be drinking water!

I haven't been able to catch much of the new series -- did Jeremy and Richard give him grief about those ads? (Not that Hammond can claim the moral high ground....)

I was hoping someone would put up these posters, I'd read about them but I don't have facebook and don't live in the south of England, so stood little chance of seeing them unless they ended up on here.
I like.

Mind you, those photos were obviously taken at the same time as the earlier posters, last year, and look at at the difference in hair colour to now.
Not complaining - I like his hair grey - just an observation.

I like those posters. Good to see that the campaign is ongoing. There's a large 'Top Beer' poster across the road from Kingston station, in south-west London. I saw it earlier this week while en route from my OH's place (he lives in deepest Surrey, just inside the M25). I wondered at the time if it was a new one, as I didn't remember seeing it anywhere before.

There's one of those by the side of the A40 road - more visible heading into town than out of it, and only from the road, not the train line . No probs though - I just have to work on persuading TOH that I need lifts to town ;D but I think the sight of the giant poster not ten ft away from the roadside might be a slight giveaway as to why I need a lift to town, though, sadly.
