James was a guest on BBC Radio5 Live today. Didn't hear about it until after the show had ended, so thank god for iPlayer: JAMES MAY drops in for a chat about his new show "James May Man Lab" in which he attempts to revive the skills of DIY and other manly pursuits that he believes have been lost in a generation of men. He also tells Richard about the changing nature of Top Gear and its metamorphosis from a car show into a sitcom which has cars on it. And he reveals that he and Richard Hammond watch repeats of Top Gear on Dave.www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00vrbc6/Richard_Bacon_James_May_joins_RichardFast Forward to 1:05:00 Edit: very interesting bit at 1:20:00 where James tells about how he checked some of his fan forums to check what we thought of Man Lab.

Twitter is such a handy tool. All radio shows mention their guests these days and I have Tweetdeck set to show all tweets that mention "James May".

TOH went out to move his car at about 2:45 and heard it mentioned on the radio, so he e-mailed me, just in time to catch it. Unfortunately I can't get onto the board at work, so I couldn't let you all know about it

James tells about how he checked some of his fan forums to check what we thought of Man Lab. *gulp*If he's does it for that purpose what other purposes has he been peeking for I wonder..... *scurries off to see what she's said in the Man Lab Thread and then hide under the desk*

Very interesting interview. How right James is regarding trying to revive some of the more practical skills in life. Sadly our brains are now so honed just for the electronic age that we are forgetting how therapeutic it can be to do something practical, be it woodworking or cooking etc. Do hope the critics will reverse some of the initial comments they made. OMG, looking in on fan forums, thank god he doesn't have access to the NC!

Assuming he has been on here as he implies, that means he knows who we are (our nom-de-plumes at least), which gives me a slightly warm feeling - as long as he hasn't been in the Naughty Corner. I do hope he has noticed how intelligent, perceptive and wise all the ladies are on the JMB.

How right you are dit, I think we all secretly hope that James will read some of what we say about him but at the same time I'd blush if he were to read it all. Oh, I think he knows how intelligent we are, didn't he say in a recent newspaper review that his fans are not scary/harmful but they are very inventive.

Just listened to the interview, as ever very interesting and insightful. However, James compared us to a ladies underwear cataglogue and it sounds to me from what he said that he visits his fan sights quite often as he seems to know who his regular fan forum posters are! and how "we" (collectively) feel / comment on his previous shows and TG etc etc.... Does make me wonder (as these things always do and we all ponder about) if he does have access to the Naughty Corner

The comparison was based on the reasons for reading it, not on the contents! ;D This forum has been around for three years (third anniversary tomorrow, I believe), and I reckon he's been aware of its existence for most of that time. If I remember correctly, he sent a Christmas message a couple of years ago, which was pretty cool.

Yes, it was an interesting interview - I wonder if he'll be able to get another Man Lab series out of the beeb on the basis he obviously intends to alter it? I think the changes he outlined would improve it so long as the humour is kept in, otherwise it might be a bit dry.
While I was listening, I realised he reminded me of my Dad (and Mr Crumbs) - he was a very practical man and loved mucking about in his shed building and repairing stuff. Mr Crumbs and Dad got on so well because they had a shared interest of drinking tea and pontificating on the best way to sort out a carpentery problem, for example.
Well, the shrinks do say humans sub-conciously look for a partner that reminds us of our parents.

Temptation is great until you know the reality! Not sure how he'd cope if he dared to step foot in there. You may recall our resident male member went in there recently and needed a long time to recover from the experience. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'd have thought it would be easy enough for him to look at the NC, via someone else! I suspect he'd like it - most people want to be found sexually attractive so long as it isn't creepy and we aren't creepy. Just lusty in a healthy way and jolly with it.
