The first episode of the second series aired here last night. Despite having less ads than the other commercial channels, SBS still managed to cut bits out of the show, e.g. the smart-alec comments James makes when he's trying to draw people ("no, you're still too fat", that sort of thing) which was one of the funniest parts of that segment. I'm sure there were other bits cut too - although I can't pinpoint them, the show felt ever so slightly more rushed than the original. Another thing I find interesting is how shows are re-edited with different backing music. Why do they do that? You know when James and Oz are running along to "a topical soundtrack" when they're in Dartmoor? Well, the music in last night's show was different, and James's voiceover was different as well. I can't remember the exact phrase but the word "freedom" was in there to replace "topical soundtrack" because there simply wasn't one. This also happened in the Caterham kit car race: the version that was originally broadcast here on SBS has different music to that on the Channel 9 version when the Stig is driving through London. I remember it distinctly because I loved the music in the SBS version and the other one was nowhere near as good. (I'll stop there. It's late and my cider consumption has been a little quicker than normal tonight...)

This is a common complaint, Pie, but the BBC - and in fact all the major broadcasters - have a blanket agreement with the Performing Right Society (and a couple of others) to use any music their database for a fixed (large) fee. They then inform PRS whose music they have used (in the form of monthly returns - remember them well!) and PRS pay the appropriate rights holders. This only applies to broadcast on the channels who are party to the agreement. As soon as the programme passes on to another broadcaster, the blanket agreement no longer applies, so cheaper generic music is substituted.
I've often thought - why don't they just fork out and pay the additional royalties to keep the original music, but I gather they can be huge!

My biggest beef with the music changes was the Vietnam special. The BBC version had the replacement bike blaring "Born In The USA". The American release had it playing the "Star Spangled Banner". Definitely a different feel. Born in the USA was so much better. Plus they had to take out a few of Jeremy's lines because he was referring to the 'correct' song.

Ah, that makes a bit more sense. It always gets back to money, doesn't it. There's another one I just remembered, from the first series of Man Lab when James is "traumatising" Dodger. The original music is a Susan Boyle song, yet what was broadcast here a few weeks ago was some sort of national anthem (can't remember exactly which one now). The SuBo song had me in stitches, yet the other one had no comedic value whatsoever.

Could have sworn it was Susan Boyle with the dog......phwew!

i was really disappointed that they changed the music to the Space Funeral when it was aired last Monday on SBS, it just wasnt the same It took the original emotion away! so sad. i dont regret downloading as soon as its aired in Britain, Im grateful to of experieced the whole package to its fullest. No " Welcome Home" by Radical Face, just some pop operatic rendition , ahh so sad

I hadn't seen that before dit. Thanks. It was really a cute interview. Although, I would respond to James that I am only 35 and I LOVE classic rock and I'm not ashamed to admit it! ;D

You know I think BBCA may be run by a part time volunteer organization. Since these lovely people, who obviously have no background in TV programing and marketing, are contributing what time they can give out of the goodness of their heart and are funded by the measly monthly donations via my cable bill, I hate to complain....but I must.
I was just getting ready to praise them for using their website to properly promote the upcoming airing of James May's Man Lab. I noticed it on the Coming Soon section of their website. I clicked and there was a lovely picture of James with the title of the show with no specific air date but it gave me hope. Now, poof! It has disappeared!
Richard's Crash Course was initially poorly promoted and now the channel won't shut up about it. Got to admit, the PR people did quite a job in the week leading up to the premier of the show. Coming soon type "articles" were everywhere. I love seeing Richie wherever he shows up but I'm now getting sick of his face.
Maybe I'm just hard to please.

Well, it's hopeful that it was at least up for a while. And I get what you're saying about Hammond, he's everywhere. As much as I love Hammond, I'd much rather see James's mug every time I turned on TV.

Hmm..well, I'm pretty sure that lad never saw Manlab. I think some guys in the US did it first (NASA, or a university or something) and Manlab borrowed their idea. There's a link to the original experiment somewhere, but I can't remember where - probably over on Final Gear. Don't think the NASA guys used it to dispose of departed pets, though. Edit: It was MIT, not NASA. In fact, it's been done a few times. Think James was a first for the UK, though.

Picked this up on a roundup of Euro 2012 coverage:
I trust they'll be studying their Manlab recordings carefully.

OK, so how many of us went straight to no.5?
All I can say is that the design exposes what I have always considered to be one of the most amusing parts of a man's anatomy!

Can I ask what you mean by exposes his anatomy?
You do realise that, that part on a boiler suit is normally zippered or buttoned. Also not mean to be skin tight else it would be pointless. (btw not saying this harshly just asking!)

I was talking about his knees! I've always found men's knees really funny, don't know why. Men in shorts always make me giggle. I suppose there are some young hunks who can make shorts look good, but the Average British Male just looks knobbly, then has pale legs dangling out.
Sorry if what I put was misleading, antonia! Or perhaps I misinterpreted your design, which I assumed was denim shorts with a flowery shirt

I'm not a fan of a man in any kind of shorts, to be fair! All those knobbly knees - not a man's best feature!

Ah, but do you have good knees? What in the world would you do in Southern California all year? Not sure how long you'd last laughing at knees.

What in the world would you do in Southern California all year? Not sure how long you'd last laughing at knees. Ah, but I imagine a browned, Californian knee would be a rather different prospect to the so-often (though by no means always) British pasty knee. This knee is frequently accompanied by leather sandals worn over socks, and occasionally beards are involved. This is not a good look. A well-turned sun-bronzed knee might change my mind. A matching pair could be even better.
