"It’s either Hammersmith or California for me." Ah! Come to California, James! The CA-based Mayhemers will get you settled in nicely.

And if you ever want to buy a property in Norfolk you know who to ask. I'd love to show you around.

No he needs to go to East coast U.S. Northeast is beautiful from Maryland on up to Maine. Upstate NY is gorgeous and cold. We know he hates the cold. Doesn't he go to Frisco to get his wine.

California? It's way too populated out here, especially where I am and it has gotten worse over the years (there has been less physical room to expand in the city, I find). Come and visit, sure; if the weather drops below 70F people start complaining. He'd love the weather...people wear shorts year round; in the summer they wear sandals and in the winter they wear Uggs. People are spoiled here when it comes to the weather. If you can afford it, it is a gorgeous place to live. Adrian, Babs and I can show him Southern CA, that's for sure. Doubt he'd want to leave with the 3 of us in tow. We'll show him a good time in our respective cities and head up to Sonoma and Napa to finish the job and send him back to Hammersmith to think long and hard about what he wants to do. ;D As always, thank you Dit.

Or he could come further north. I promise to keep him warm during the long winters.

Adrian, Babs and I can show him Southern CA, that's for sure. Since I have very little experience with SoCal, I'll show him around the Bay Area. Lots of nice places, great restaurants, and whatnot. Plus, it's been quite warm and sunny. The temperatures here are usually mild compared to further north, where it's either cold/foggy/snowy (winter) or ridiculously hot (summer).

For some reason that surprises me but I don't know why. I have been to California - we did a road trip a few years ago and I absolutely loved it. But I don't think I'd live there (no offence those of you who live there), although staying for a year or two would be excellent. I loved the East Coast - probably because it's a bit more like home. I would absolutely love to live in NYC for a year.
I dunno - I would have thought he'd go for somewhere different although I struggle to work out where or why.

Hmmm...I assume he means the northern part of CA. Decent climate, excellent wine, micro-breweries, good food (but not much curry) Pacific Coast Highway for driving and biking with a wonderful view..I can see why it might appeal.
Personally, I was more surprised to hear that he liked Norfolk.

Norfolk gets a lot of flack from the TG boys but Jeremy has written about bird shooting up here. Maybe James does it too. Norfolk is still a fairly quiet, unspoilt and empty place. We have miles of beaches like this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoNbxgFAkXcand some lovely old pubs.

Thanks for the read. Gotta say though, getting a little tired of the "Aw shucks, don't know why people like me" thing. He has every right to be pleased with himself and his work. After global success with TG and his various solo projects, it just seems a little sad, like he's fishing for a compliment. Go on James, toot your own horn. People will still love you.

Good article. You would think after all this time he would have at least some idea that he's doing something right. It's one thing to be humble, another to be intentionally clueless. True, Adrian. I agree. I did like the fact that he hopes women will watch ML too. That was nice. If he trolls on this board, he knows women already do.

I liked the article and didn't think James was being too critical of himself. Critical of "blokes," yes.

This made me giggle. Swedish massage actually didn't originate in Sweden nor was created by a Swede (it was technically created by a Dutchman, if memory serves me correctly). On top of that, there is no "Swedish massage" in Sweden (don't tell him that). The strokes that are used in the massage are actually French terms (effleurage, pettrisage, friction and tapotement). Only the English speaking countries call it "Swedish massage" (to my knowledge) and I believe it is called "classic massage" everywhere else (it also includes sports massage and aromatherapy). Glad he is getting deep tissue, though. If anybody needs it, he does. I'll stop preaching. It was a lovely article. Thank you for posting, Dit.

Awww. I love it when he references pop culture from my childhood, like the Swedish Chef and (from the Man Lab book) Scooby-Doo. Reminds me that we do have some things in common, even if it's only 70's TV.

They're crazy animals. EDIT: Wait don't they have reindeer (Caribou, in N. America) or something? Or is that further north?

I wouldn't confuse the two here though. Very different animals. I've happened upon some ill-tempered elk during rutting season but I wouldn't want to meet up with a moose any time of year.

I once shared a field with a cow moose. She was eating on one side, and I was picking wild strawberries on the other. We were probably 100 yards or so apart. I didn't bother her, and she didn't bother me. She eventually ambled away when she'd finished her lunch. ;D A beautiful creature.
