Top Gear Patagonia Christmas Special Saturday 27 December 2014 8:30PM BBC2Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will be back in a two-part Top Gear Patagonia Special, on a road trip through South America. The Top Gear Christmas Specials are famous for two things: putting cars through immensely tough challenges, and not being ready in time for Christmas. This year though, not only will it be transmitting at roughly the right time, it also features the most gruelling car exploits yet, as the boys take three V8 sports cars on a 1600 mile trek through Patagonia. The usual habitat for a Porsche 928, a Lotus Esprit and a Ford Mustang is the civilised world of tarmac, but in the hands of Jeremy, Richard and James, these three sports bred machines face swamps, deserts, forests, beaches and ski slopes as they try to get to the southernmost city in the world, in order to stage an epic game of car football against Argentina. Along the way there are broken bones, epic backdrops, mechanical calamities and cows, plus a climax that wasn't exactly the one that was expected. Top Gear Patagonia Special: first details Posted by TopGear.com 2:12 pm on Tuesday November 25, 2014 Here’s your first picture from the upcoming Top Gear Patagonia Special. And this year, this Christmas special will be broadcast at roughly the right time, too. Jeremy, Richard and James will take a Porsche 928, Lotus Esprit and Ford Mustang through their most gruelling challenge to date: a 1600-mile trek through Patagonia to the southernmost city in the world, in order to stage an epic game of car football against Argentina. There will be swamps, deserts, forests, beaches, and ski slopes for the three V8 sports cars to suffer. There will also be broken bones, mechanical calamities and even some cows. Plus, a climax that wasn’t really on the cards. We’ll have more transmission times and dates for you very soon, so stay tuned… transmission.blogs.topgear.com/2014/11/25/top-gear-patagonia-special-first-details/

no episode score poll? maybe a good job as I thought this was quite poor. Same old, same old! Its all getting boring and predictable - although nothing caught fire in this first part!

Why do they keep taking James out to foreign countries then breaking him?
Seriously, I agree that the second episode was better than the first, and though I also agree they used ideas from previous 'specials' they still managed to make them entertaining. There were quite a few times when Bloke and I laughed loudly, though perhaps we're easily pleased. I also think the whole debacle in Argentinia at the end was handled very well.

pt 1 was poor, pt 2 was better! This would have made a cracking one hour programme - cut out all the repeated japes, set-ups that lack credability and pretend jeopardy (not that the last 10 minutes was pretend!!! OMG. Terrifying!)
I would give pt 1 a score of 5, and an 8 for pt2. If they had cut it down to one hour, the whole thing would be at least an 8, possibly even more! The potential for an epic programme was there, but they spoilt it for me!

2nd half was definitely better!
Although I never knew James had broke ribs on the trip, felt so sorry for the guy looking at how much trouble he had getting in the car. I felt really worried for him at the end where there were problems, as he couldn't exactly hurry!

From experience, I can confirm that Lotuses (Loti?) are THE most difficult cars to get in and out of. If you're young, agile and slim and don't mind contorting your body and twisting your back like a letter 'S; then fine. For we mere mortals it's like trying to squeeze yourself into a sardine can. I made the mistake once of letting my late husband go and buy a Lotus (an Elise) without going with him, and my heart sank when he proudly pulled up outside the house and I realised as soon as I looked at it that I had no chance whatsoever of getting in or out of it - too small, too low to the ground and sills that were far too high. I did try once, and believe me, exiting onto the pavement on all fours is not a good look. I never tried again. If we went anywhere together, we went in my Mini.
James had my total sympathy; I felt his pain.
