There was a study done here about restaurant ice, which was found to be contaminated with fecal matter. Ew.

Personally I think that most food pooisoning is caused by our over-hygienic society not allowing us to build up resistance to anything that hasn't been sterilised to within an inch of its life!
Watch your cat or dog sometime. We're made of the same stuff, they just don't worry about it like we do!

Dieters look away now... 3 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE 1 Coffee Mug 4 tablesthingys flour(that's plain flour, not self-rising) 4 tablesthingys sugar 2 tablesthingys baking cocoa 1 egg 3 tablesthingys milk 3 tablesthingys oil 3 tablesthingys chocolate chips (optional) some nuts (optional) Small splash of vanilla Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well . Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla, and mix again. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes on high. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired. EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to share!) And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world? Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night! Very good but would be even beter with Choc chips and/or nuts (didn't have any in the cupboard) I see what they mean about it rising out of the cup!

Chicken Divan - a nice quick recipe if you have left over chicken and what is now Batchelors condensed mushroom soup!
Lightly cook some broccoli florets and put them in the base of an ovenproof dish.
Cover with sliced cooked chicken and, if you feel that way inclined, thinly sliced onion.
Mix the soup with a sthingyful of curry paste and spread over the chicken and onion.
Sprinkle the top with breadcrumbs, or grated cheese or both - and a few flaked almonds wouldn't go amiss if you have them to hand.
Bake in a medium oven till cooked through and brown on top - about 20 - 30 minutes should do it.
You can use condensed chicken soup, or even celery, if you'd prefer.
It's not just Delia who can do Cheat recipes!

2 qts sweet apple cider (I usually use the non-alcoholic version) 2 cups pineapple juice 1 1/2 cups orange juice 3/4 cup lemon juice 1 cup sugar 2 sticks whole cinnamon 1 teasthingy whole cloves
Combine all ingredients and bring to a boil. Serve hot.

That's based on orchard wassail, rather than the door-knocking kind. They still actually wassail the orchards in my parents' village. It involves shotguns and throwing toast into the trees as well as drinking wassail-cup

I think it does. I think the toast also has something to do with giving back something of the previous year's harvest in return for a good one in the new year. The shotguns are for scaring away evil spirit.
And probably for scaring away any kids who thought they might come back in the summer for a bit of scrumping ;D

This is great history behind it. I always love learning about the origins of the traditions we celebrate. I had no idea about the toast shooting. Love it! Thanks for that, Wy.
I can tell you one thing. For medicinal purposes, it's great for sore throats, and all other nastiness going around this time of year. The warmth of it feels great on the throat and the vitamin C helps boost your immune system. I'm going to pick up the ingredients I don't yet have and make some this week. God, I love that stuff.

Chicken with Popcorn Stuffing
When I found this recipe, I thought it was perfect for people like me, who are just never sure how to tell when poultry is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out.
BAKED STUFFED CHICKEN
1,5 kg whole chicken 1 cup melted butter 1 cup stuffing 1 cup uncooked popcorn
Salt/pepper to taste ______________________________
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Brush chicken well with melted butter, salt, and pepper.
Fill cavity with stuffing and uncooked popcorn (mixed together).
Place in baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the oven. Listen for the popping sounds.
When the chicken's arse blows the oven door open and the chicken flies across the room, it is done.

Mayfayre, that chocolare mug cake sounds fab! I will have to try that one day! Sadly, I can't offer any of my own, I am not a 'cook'. I am good at burning things though. The only thing I can make is vegetable soup. I get some chopped veg from a packet from Tesco, put it in a pot, add 3 or 4 vegetable stock cubes, add water and bring to the boil. You can add barley to it also if you want, my Nan used to do that when I was little, it was very nice. Simple, but comforting.

The dessert I have to make at Christmas, for peoples birthday's and Australia Day is Chocolate Pavlova - a Nigella Lawson recipe: Chocolate Pavlova 6 egg whites 300g caster sugar 3 tbsp cocoa powder, sieved 1 tsp balsamic or red wine vinegar 50g dark chocolate, finely chopped Preheat the oven to 180C and line a baking tray with baking paper Beat the egg whites to satiny peaks then add the sugar a sthingyful at a time until the meringue is stiff and shiny Sprinkle in the cocoa, vinegar and chocolate and fold through Mound onto the baking sheet in a circle about 23cm across Place in the oven and drop the temperature to 150C and cook for 1 to 1hr 15mins It should be crisp and dry on top and squidgy in the middle Allow to cool completely Invert on a big plate then decorate Nigella uses 500ml double cream whipped, 500g raspberries and 2-3 tbsp coarsley grated dark chocolate to put on top. I use strawberries and about half a block of Lindt 70% cocoa chocolate grated and chunks on top............everyone LOVES it. I wish they didnt like it so much so I could stop having to make it ;D Some bad pics - tastes better than it looks:
