I don't know if I mentioned this, but when we were learning an instrument in school, namely the recorder, I was joining in with everyone as I was meant to do and then on the lesson day, about 3 or 4 weeks later, the teacher told us to get our music books and stuff out and when I did this she called me up to the front of the class and told me to bring my stuff with me. I complied and she said to me that it would be best if I didn't join in with the rest of the class anymore because I wasn't very good at it and it was spoiling everyone else's enjoyment of learning an instrument. So I just had to sit there and listen or do my homework.

I played flute for a year and a half at school. It was a disaster.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTPXEs7Yi2sI appologise to some of you in advanced (a BBC clip), but this is the copy I was able to find on YT of James playing the recorder. It's not the entire thing, but a good bit of it.

Which programme does this pic come from?! I've never seen it before, but I like it! We haven't solved this riddle yet! It looks like it's a screen cap, but from what show??? Was it from the extra scenes that were on the first wine dvd?

But then again, I would have loved it if my teacher had done that - I developed a freakin' phobia of recorder lessons

Such a beautiful instrument. I do have a recorder, can't play it at all. Would like to practice, but it's fairly late at night and I might get murdered. Guess I'm reading books and surfing the net.

one can play a recorder..? What is it? :-#
I've always been very good at music, or so teachers claimed. I once got an A-, which was very unusual, because I could find out what the notes are by listening to a piece of music from the Lord Of The Rings, incl the accordes. I think it's a shame I never got myself a keyboard or, yea, a violin...

I think it's a shame I never got myself a keyboard or, yea, a violin... These are recorders natThose are nicer than the one I've got, which is plastic and set me back a whole dollar on eBay. Considered to be kids instruments due to their low cost and ease of learning, and when you blow too hard on them you make a noise which is possibly the most irritating sound in the world, but I've heard people play who really know what they're doing, so they can sound very nice. James played a recorder in one of the Drink to Britain episodes. I'm not sure if I've got the time or mental determination to make myself ever learn the violin, but if there was ever an instrument I'd learn, it'd be that one. I never did an instrument in school, but I was in choir for four years. I wasn't bad. I wasn't good, but I wasn't bad either. Switched to fine arts afterwards. I was better at that. If nothing else, I have to say, I vastly prefer being involved in a show where people come in, look at your work, comment, then leave, to any kind of public performance.

I think it's a shame I never got myself a keyboard or, yea, a violin... You can play by ear, Nat! That is an awesome ability. Some people are never able to do that. I had to learn the recorder in grade school and I think the only things I remember teaching myself are the songs from the Disney movie The Lion King. Heh. This is what a recorder looks like: I can play piano (though poorly) and I can read the sheet music for left and right hand, but it will take me a while to actually play it. I took lessons for it for about a year outside of class. You'd probably be better off going out for coffee while I deciphered the notes and I'd probably sound like a cat walking across the keyboard if I were to play out what I have deciphered. I'm horribly rusty. About the only song I can somewhat play is called "Cristofori's Dream", which an ex in high school taught me how to play and I can play the notes, but not at the correct pace anymore. It's the only two handed song I can somewhat play. I would've loved to have learned the violin or stayed with the piano more. Even though I am right handed, I would play the guitar left handed, even though I can't play anything.

By coincidence, we had my Dad's piano dropped off (almost literally) this weekend. Very poignant - he bought it when I was a very small girl indeed. He played Chopin, Bach, Schubert, Brahms and more. He was a very very accomplished pianist and played with great sensitivity. My brother taught himself - to an amazing standard. He tried to teach me but we both failed miserably. He couldn't understand why I couldn't pick it up like him. I might try to learn with a proper teacher but in the meantine I intend to teach myself this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtXOTxd6JVEIt sounds simple but probably isn't. The words are so......just listen and you'll know what I mean.

Congrats on your Obscenity, crumbs! (Don't know whether that sounded right!)
I can't find the actual clip either of James playing, but I'm pretty sure he's playing 'Maple Street Rag', which he seems to do at the drop of a hat, and I have a feeling it was something to do with timing, whether something could be done before he got to the end of the piece, I suspect? It'll come to me in the end, I suppose.
I played the violin for about six years, though I wasn't much good, only got to Grade 3 level. The trouble with the violin is that you can tell for yourself when it isn't going well, and it's difficult to play and wince at the same time. I learned piano from the age of six to eighteen (that was me, not the piano, do keep up!), got to grade 8 and I still play occasionally, though at the moment I can't actually get at my piano; I'm using the study as a box room, ie it's full of boxes that happen to be stacked between the door and the piano. The only problem with learning for so long is that I play 'to the dots', in other words I need a piece ofwritten-out music in front of me, or to learn from that in order to play without it. I'm so jealous of people who can just sit down at the instrument and extemporise.
The photo I would really like to see of James is when he was performing as a minstrel when he was a student. I would love to see that!

When I was about four I asked my parents for a violin. Didn't get it. To this day I am convinced had I gotten that violin when I asked for it I would have been a virtuoso. ;D I took piano lessons for a few months when I was in grade school. I took up the flute as an adult (about ten years ago) and I was doing quite well until I developed asthma. I love music passionately. I have a button that says music=life and I truly believe that. My biggest problem is that I can not read music to save my life! When I look at a staff they appear all wobbly to me and I swear the notes move around. When I was learning the flute, I would go through the sheet music, count the lines, and write in the letters with the corresponding notes. It took forever but then I could play without a problem. I have always been jealous of people who can read music and play instruments. Especially those who can play by ear or pick up any instrument and play it with in a few minutes. What a great talent to have!

I have been looking for that clip but have not had any luck.
