May, a sex symbol? ........................ He undoubtedly scrubs up well. And he does have lovely hair. INDEED!!!!! Ladies, we give you James May: suave, sophisticated, self-possessed - and to be approached with extreme cautionI'll take one and throw caution to the wind ;D

The Guardian article is excellent; intelligent, dryly humorous, individual, self-deprecating:
I'm often criticised for being nerdy. And that's because it's true.
I turn the whole house off if I've got to do anything electrical, and I'd turn the whole street off if I could.
His writing always entertains me, and frequently makes me think.

I was once asked to explain to another American the appeal of James May. You know, it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Without mentioning the sheer sexiness of the man and sticking to the more professional-based facts, I had to explain about an entirely different segment of television personality that we really don't have here.
The job that James does really isn't replicated on American television in the same way. We have broadcasters, but they don't really branch out and do programs other than the one they've been hired to do. There wouldn't be say, a newscaster making an antiques program on the side. Most presenters make the programs they are told to or hired to make.
We do have Anthony Bourdain. He's kind of close. But his shows revolve around food and travel only. He writes books and it's possible he writes the occasional column for a newspaper or magazine, I'm not certain. He tends to be really pigeon-holed. However, he is worth taking a look at. Very entertaining!
So, when I was explaining James' appeal, I focused not only on what topics his programs cover, but also his personality which most certainly comes through from his presenting - the timbre of his voice, how passionate he is about the subject and his easy going style. I explained that what you see is what you get. Mostly what he shows the camera is the real James.
But I think examples of his writing, as Jacqui mentioned would give the most insight into what makes James James and what makes him as popular as he is. ;D ;D

It's excellently written. I do get a sense of who James really is through his writing and I'm reminded of what my Creative Writing Professor once said while discussing our work. "People can pretend to be what they aren't and sometimes, their quite good at it. It is through their writing that the mask is off." It was such an amazing comment that I wrote it down. XD I too am criticized for being a nerd. I'm fascinated by things that don't normally interest people my age. I like to think I'm a "Renaissance woman". My mother taught us (my sister and I) to be self sufficient and to do the things that can be done ourselves. As a matter of fact she's the one who's done all the electrical work around the house. Regardless of my dad being around. I've learned a lot from her <3
