I'm afraid what I would ask James would be censored! I suspect quite a few of us have highly developed skills of self-censorship!

I think we should leave this particular question now as it has already been answered and should be left. Can we move on now?

Hi ladies... its been a while since I last logged in , got problem with my laptop but I'm back... ;D I will ask him out to dinner? & a country drive. That's something if I dare to ask James. But I'm a little bit shy so my questions would be: 1. Can I have a picture or two with you, kind sir ( , not sure about the last one...hehehe) 2. Can you explain to me how car engine works?

I have so many questions I'd better do an interview: Cue Desert Island Discs music... Kirsty "Bayleaf" Young: (after brief introduction, starts off with childhood-type question)
1. You were born in Bristol, and although during your childhood your family moved around the UK, I can detect a trace of a West Country accent in your voice. Is there a town or region you regard as home?
I believe you lived in South Wales for a short time as a young boy. Do you tease the Welsh out of affection, or did you have any unpleasant experiences there as a boy?
Although you describe yourself as a city person and tease your rural-dwelling colleagues on Top Gear, do you find any aspect of life in the country appealing?
(First record)
2. You studied music at Lancaster. Did you ever hope to become a professional musician?
You have said that opera isn't your thing, you prefer your music on a smaller scale. What about early operas, for example Monteverdi's Orfeo or Purcell's Dido and Aeneas?
Did you ever finish making your lute?
Now that you are so well-known, it could be difficult for you to indulge in amateur music-making or performance. Do you regret not having that opportunity? If you could be anonymous, would you join a choir that performed early music, perhaps? Or would you prefer to play in a jazz band in a smoky club?
I understand that your job means that you are away from home a great deal. How often are you able to practise the piano? Is is frustrating not being able to practise as much as you would like? Do your fingers itch to play the pianos in hotels?
(Second record)
3. You have implied that you fell into writing by accident, after applying for a sub-editor's job. When did it become apparent that you had a talent for writing? And when did you decide to that writing could be your career? Has your style been influenced by any other humorous writers, perhaps Bill Bryson for example? (Bayleaf ducks to avoid a slap!)
You have often said that you enjoy technical books. Do you ever read fiction? What was the last novel you read?
To be continued...

These are excellent questions. Too bad James doesn't have an official web site; there could be an "Ask Mr. May" feature, where people could post or e-mail questions & he could choose several to answer. The singer Morrissey does this several times a year on his semi-official fan site and it's always very interesting and funny.
Does James dislike Bill Bryson, is that why you asked that, Bayleaf? James quotes former National Lamthingy writer P.J. O'Rourke in his current column, so I guess he likes him.

Weeell, he had a bit of a rant about Bryson on Top Gear once, about Bryson (according to James) wanting to preserve Britain's heritage to the point of making us a twee theme park. There's probably a Youtube of it somewhere....
Apparently he said he'd be "too scared" to come on here for a chat. A pity, I'm sure because (I hope?!!) we could keep it sensible, and not too intrusive.
Whenever you see him interviewed it's usually by some idiotic airhead who always ask him about Richard's crash. You can sense the exasperation.
The Radio 3 Private Passions interview is excellent though, there's a link on here somewhere.

There could be a go-between, someone to sort of field the questions as it were, so James wouldn't be "here" live, chatting with us alleged madwomen. That's how Morrissey does it. Or "Ask Mr. May" could be a feature on the Top Gear site, so he would feel even more secure and in his element.

I wouldn't be able to keep my composure to ask an intelligent question. I'd be like that little boy on the Tube who asked him, "Are you that man off the telly?"

I loved that recent wharf article where all the kiddies on the tube are like 'wheres your car?!' HAHAHAHAH! Didnt realise he would ever chose to take the tube, even where the signing was. I used to live in Westferry and he drove around there for a shoot once. Still the jubetube is the nicer one... when its F**KING WORKING!
