i think that the 500 looks a bit gay-ish to me, bit too round and quirky, the interior doesnt appeal to me but nevertheless a good piece of engineering. would prefer one of the older abarth's over that easily.......or a 126

Oh no, I love it! It's adorable.
Maybe it is more for girls?
I am not saying that to be controversial, but no matter how much they try, sometimes some cars are more for girls than boys.

No, I think you're more or less right, UM. All products have to be made for a target market, and very small cars tend to be primarily geared towards young women. The Ka, which is on the same platform these days as the Fiat 500, has historically been bought mostly by women too.

But the Ka's styling is a bit hit-or-miss I think. It has bnever been one of my faves to be honest.

Absolutely. And it isn't as well finished as the Fiat, either.

One of my 'dream cars' now, since I saw the new Fiat 500 and then I saw an old one and saw how similar they looked, is to have an old, original Fiat 500 from when they were first made in the 50s or 60s (maybe not too sure of the dates) and painted in pale blue and white. And if it was a convertible so much the better. Blue and white leather interior as well.

I love the old Fiat 500. Did you see the pic Mayfayre of the old Abarth near the beginning of this thread? I had a neighbour in Birmingham who had a pale blue 500 back in the early 90s. It was SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

Awwww. Then again, any car (almost) in the blue and white colours is my dream. In the Russian cars section of the last series of TG, they had a blue and white one and I was almost peeing myself with delight! I loved it!

Gotta admit, I prefer the old 500 - but then i prefer the old Beetle, the old Mini, etc etc. Maybe I'm a bit traditional ;D but i don't really like the 'new old' models of cars.

I was saying somewhere earlier that I find the new Mini and especially the new Beetle to be really cynical bits of marketing. I should feel the same about the Fiat 500 really, but I don't.
Though to be honest, I do prefer the original 500, and I love the 600 too.

Slightly OT, but I just remembered that I heard today, that something like 700 workers at the Mini plant have lost their jobs

Why am I reminded of Jeremy's column 'Norfolk Twinned With Norfolk', where he talks about the reactions he got when he drove his Cosworth...
I am used to having people point as I go by. Most shout, 'Hey, look, it's a Cosworth!' but in Norfolk they shout, 'Hey, look, it's a car!'

I had a nice sighting this afternoon, but not of a car. As I was making my way to uni, a middle-aged chap walked out of a side road in front of me and I immediately noticed he had a very nice arse. He was wearing well cut jeans - spectacularly well cut jeans - and a sheepskin bomber jacket and he looked far better turned out than most of the scruffy oiks in that part of Plymouth. Then I noticed he had an open face crash helmet and goggles slung over his arm. Then I spotted his bike. It was a rather lovely Moto Guzzi California 1100i. Very, very pretty We had a nice chat about it. He'd seen the sun was out and decided it was as good an excuse as any to get the bike out It's a funny thing, but Californias seem to appeal to a certain type of person. I ran into a chap in a pub last year who had an 850 T3 California and he had a very similar approach. They're a bit like Alfa owners - they know bits are going to drop off, but they love them anyway. They also seem to not be short of a bob or two!

LOL, I think I'd have kept that for myself, I'm afraid ;D
Unfortunately, it was pretty clear he only had room in his life for one great love affair - and he was having it with that Guzzi!

I got a invitation from the local Fiat dealer to go and see it. I just have nobody to come with me Just to make sure that everybody gets this. The car will not be in the showroom for many weeks now. I think it will still take a few months before we can see it here in Holland. I think I will find somebody ones it is.

The Peel is so *sweeeeeeeeet* (in high pitched Jezza voice).
I'd get so claustrophobic in it though. I'm sure.
