Absolutely amazing! ;D I kept getting the feeling the pianist was thinking about doing someone's taxes, and that he was only playing the piano to keep his hands busy. ;D ;D He was just effortless! ;D

I have just returned from the campus of Leeds University, from the Clothworkers Centenary concert Hall to be exact, where I saw performed the most amazing harpsichord recital by Mahan Esfahani. The programme included a work by Olando Gibbons,five praelidia and fugues by Bach, and a new work called Rhema by Marc Yeats and some Scarlatti. All were fantastic. If you closed your eyes and stretched your imagination, you could imagine James giving his recital. I have seen three of these lunchtime concerts now which last about one hour, and best of all, they are free

I know it's not yet Christmas, but nonetheless I've been listening to a gorgeous instrumental version of one of my favourite carols, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. www.youtube.com/watch?v=roy3Ft6Fvbk

Don't worry xj I believe this is an advent hymn, and as such can be played/sung before Christmas. It is also a particular favourite of mine, especially sung unaccompanied and by candle light- Kings College Cambridge do a very good version of this processional hymn. Another favourite is 'Three Kings from Persian lands Afar.'

I fell for Runrig way back in 1988 when I first heard Protect and Survive. I saw them live once, at the Ruisrock Festival in my city in 1993. Currently listening to a new song by R.E.M. called It Happened Today off the forthcoming album Collapse Into Now. This has replaced all the Christmas music on my playlist during the last two days, I'm so totally in love with it! www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mV1H8e2CgM&feature=channel

I've been out tonight singing round the piano with the local operatic society. No-one was prepared to sing this. Now I know why.

IMHO, one of her best recordings ever - and I've listened to a lot of her stuff over the years. Just gorgeous. *sigh*

Am I allowed "What were you listening to"?
I went to a brilliant concert last night, the Manchester Concert Orchestra with soprano and tenor soloists. It had a late start as it was timed to finish as the New Year arrived and was an absolutely fabulous evening. There were some beautiful pieces (Nimrod, Fantasia of Greensleeves, Nessun Dorma), some excellent patriotic stuff (Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory) and lots of silliness - they made out they couldn't have cannon in the 1812 because of 'elfen safety' so we all had paper bags with numbers on to blow up then 'pop' when our number was held up, and it worked! Then there were fireworks and balloons at the end.
In addition to all of this, one of the trombonists endeared himself to every lady in my party because he got increasingly naughty as the evening went on, starting off in a small way by bouncing up and down in his seat, developing through putting a paper bag on his head and ending up by stealing a small gong from the percussionists behind him and standing very solemnly towards the end of the encore of Nessun Dorma to give one quiet tap of the gong, for which he took his own bow. The other performers were in stitches and obviously didn't mind.
This is the JMB related bit...
The odd thing was that in the car afterwards I realised that this man actually reminded me of James in his mannerisms and movements (he did a little 'victory dance' at one point which was very reminiscent), also his hair and build, and I wasn't going to mention it as it seemed too well, convenient, or my over-vivid imagination at it again. But as we were driving home one of my friends added to the conversation with, "Well, of course you would have liked him, Dit, he was very much like James May", and the other two immediately agreed, so I didn't feel quite so silly after all.

It is indeed a classic, as is the younger brother that wrote and sings it! I like Tim too, but not in the same way as Neil..... ( - ;
