For the record, before the moral high ground gets any further towards offending me, I've no idea where Jeremy, James, Richard, The Stig OR the crew were actually staying. I very much doubt it was the Travelodge though, functional and nice as it was! ;D It just so happens that the hotel bar we were all in by sheer coincidence is the one within the NEC area that is a) by far the nicest and b) open the latest so we could drink till 4am with gay abandon and c) the one where we knew we'd be able to get a nice big table and they wouldn't mind us having our friend's birthday cake.

That's a great pic of Evel Ken-Hammond - and yes, Becks, that is worrying, but even more worrying is the fact that I can see what you mean ;D
Stiggy, actually I know what you mean - and it largely reflects what a lot of people who weren't kids at the time said. On reflection, he wasn't a very nice person, but it could be argued that his selfishness was part of what drove him to do the things he did, and to keep on doing them. And he was a hell of an entertainer... but you had to be the right age - I'm not much younger than Richard, so I grew up with the action figures and the playsets and... coolest of all... the friction powered stunt bike (I SO wanted that. My friend Simon had one when we were about 8 years old and he used to bring it to mine. I had an AT-AT from Star Wars and he always wanted one of those, so we shared). People old enough to take notice of the newspapers and the telly were often less smitten (actually, that may explain why mum never would let me have the toys myself and I always had to play with Simon's), and of course, people who were younger just look back and see a bloke in an Elvis costume falling off a motorbike.

I'm a couple of months older than Richard, so at that point in my life, Evil Kenival was my hero. As much as I wanted to see him live, my parents never took me and never really explained why, but at least I was able to see him on TV. I had his action motorcycle too and me and the boys I was friends with in my old neighbourhood used to race each other and jump ramps and ditches in our yards to see if we could try some of his stunts. It was alot of fun, but alot of us ended up getting hurt pretty bad doing those things. I had my worst stunt bike accident in my front yard, since we had a really high ditch. Even though I'm not a boy, where the bar on my bike hit hurt really bad and I was suffering for a week. I never read any of the articles or took notice of the news, since I didn't really watch with my parents. But last winter, when Richard did his special, my eyes were open and my husband had to explain all of it to me, since he's quite a bit older than me and saw the dark side of Evil. It still doesn't change the fact that I thought he was the coolest. It just makes me glad I didn't actually meet him. Hence my belief - I'll probably never meet any of my heroes - at all. And I'm okay with that. |
