Jeremy Clarkson has sparked fresh BBC controversy by joking about murdering prostitutes. Clarkson comments spark controversy pa.press.net Jeremy Clarkson has sparked fresh BBC controversy by joking about murdering prostitutes. The Top Gear presenter, 48, made the quip about lorry drivers killing sex workers on Sunday night's BBC Two show. As he completed a lorry-driving task, he said: "This is a hard job and I'm not just saying that to win favour with lorry drivers, it's a hard job. Change gear, change gear, change gear, check mirror, murder a prostitute, change gear, change gear, murder. That's a lot of effort in a day." His comments come after serial killer Steve Wright was convicted in February of murdering five prostitutes in Ipswich. Wright was a former lorry driver, as well as pub landlord and forklift truck driver. Clarkson's joke, made before the watershed, sparked 188 complaints to the BBC, out of what the Corporation said was seven million viewers. Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom said it had been contacted by viewers angry at the remarks. A spokesman said: "Ofcom has received complaints regarding Top Gear. These complaints are currently being assessed against the Broadcasting Code. All UK broadcasters must adhere to Ofcom's Broadcasting Code which sets standards for the content of television and radio broadcasting." Oh I will not stand for it if they pull a Russell Brand or Jonathan Ross on him........ entertainment.uk.msn.com/tv/news/Article.aspx?cp-documentid=10644184>1=61503

D'you know what.....that comment passed me by completely on Sunday. If it was cleared by 'higher ups' at the Beeb, then THEY should be the ones taking the flak. Goodness only knows what gets said that gets vetoed for airing......we'll probably never know. But ultimately, the ones who said it was okay to have that particular thing allowed onto the programme are the ones at fault here.

I did hear it and thought nothing of it truth be told.
Let's hope it doesn't unfold into yet another BBC Drama Spectacular....

The world will shortly come to an end, no-one has a sense of humour these days anymore. Nothing was said when Jeremy said about James being raped by builders in the last series, this is all just a ploy to see how many celebs the general public can get into trouble. It's ridiculous. And it p*sses me off big time.

Or the *gently cupping* comment...
Ooh the BBC can hold onto their seats if they threaten Jezza... I'll unleash my Petrolhead Fury upon them! LOL
"And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers." (Sorry been watching Pulp Fiction again.... )

If it does, I'll be doing a GoTe and writing a strong worded letter to the BBC. Because again, it is the celebrity who is getting penilised for it. People know what Jeremy Clarkson is like, he will always crack an offensive joke, because it's funny to take the p*ss out of other people. Period. If the people who complained, don't like what he said, then they shouldn't have watched the show. Every week he says at least one offensice thing, whether it's really offensive, or just a little bit offensive. He will continue to do it. I highly doubt he cares what other people think, or else he wouldn't have made those comments. I found it funny, and if others didn't like it, sod 'em. EDIT: It's not like he wasn't stating the truth anyway, it's well known that Long Distance (not just Lorry) Drivers are connected with Prostitutes, and them being murdered. Don't like it? Change your job.

some people really need to get with the program - literally. I strongly suspect these moaners rarely watch TG and therefore don't have a clue about Jezza and his wit!!!!!

According to the BBC, there are 188 registered complaints (as I've said elsewhere, a whopping 0.0025% of the audience) and that somehow manages to make the top entertainment story on the BBC website. 0.0025%. If that's all he's managed to upset, I'd say it was a good week I admit the comment made me think, "oh, some people aren't going to like that" but it didn't bother me. However, if this blows up, I'm going to speak to OFCOM because as much as I believe people are entitled to make complaints, we are also entitled to complain about the way complaints are handled. I think events in recent weeks have shown an over-zealous approach to it and in their desperation to show that Something is Being Done, they aren't necessarily targetting the right people, or in the right way. It's a reflection of the general unhappy state of things at the moment - when people are in crisis, kneejerk reactions to placate the masses seem to be the way. I think I will be appealing for calm rather than baying for blood

Maybe this is the credit crunch hitting the Beeb. They're trying to get all their most expensive Celebs into trouble so they can give 'em the push and save some money!

The Daily Telegraph readers are, for the most part, in agreement and in support of Jeremy. Several are taking apart any comparisons to the Ross/Brand mess of last week, too. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/3374093/Jeremy-Clarkson-in-new-BBC-standards-row.html#postComment(I've not yet seen the 'gentle cupping' or raping by builders references mentioned above...but BBC-America most likely would edit those out anyways for us, and we're also a bit behind in the series...anyone want to explain the first one to me?)

That pretty much sums everything up Liz. And good on the Beeb for saying it! I thought so too, especially given the trouble they're in, and the fact that Jeremy is also a potential target in the 'overpaid BBC stars' row??

I posted my views on there. I warn you, if you're offended easily and don't take Jeremy's side, don't read it...

My irony-meter went into overdrive after I saw that article in the Heil. A newspaper that printed the following words with regards to those five women who happened to prostitutes has no right to be taking the moral high ground:
"That doesn't make it justifiable homicide, but in the scheme of things the deaths of these five women is no great loss."
*foams with rage*

I heard it too, and it never bothered me either. It was just something he said, a flippant remark, it isn't as though he meant it.
Why can't people just get a life!
