Somebody usually gets to it here before I do and I just follow the latest link It's usually there by Friday lunchtime. Usually I read it straight away, but today I had to pop into town between lectures and I was working hard all day, poor me... but at least I knew I had James's column to come home to ;D

should I tell him about my yoof who informed me the he wasn't drinking buckfast any more, I commended him on giving up the booze and he responded "I'm having table wine now, you can get three bottles for a tenner"?

ROFL, oh dear, poor Glam!
They make Buckfast Tonic Wine (in what way it's supposed to be a tonic I don't know) just up the road from here. It really is made by monks in a real monastery too!

the posh yoofs round here drink it with champagne and call it a Velvet Elvis

Velvet Elvis? Sounds like a song by Weird Al Yankovic... How very odd. And even though I'm not a champagne person - I think it's highly overrated, plus the bubbles get up my nose - it seems like a waste of champagne

Alas, both the hobby shops I used to frequent have vanished, and before James even set foot in a vineyard (well, for TV purposes anyway). The first was very much akin to James's description, not least because half of the shop was devoted solely to model railways and all manner of items to assist the enthusiast (he would have loved it in there). The second one was rather more biased towards girly hobbies but that too disappeared.
Blandness is everywhere. You can never tell which town you're in these days because all the high streets and shopping malls look identical - all distinguishing features seem to have been lost. Even the little market town down the road from me (population c. 3,500) now has a wine shop - in addition to the excellent off-licence which has been there for years and already carried more than enough to keep a population of c. 3,500 merry as hell throughout any adversity.
The trouble is though, without enough traffic through the door to support them, the small shops are inevitably going to disappear....

Is it just me, or have the Torygraph not yet put up a link to this week's column? I can get to it direct but not via their website We used to have a couple of hobby/model shops localy too, but they disappeared years ago. I have no idea what they are now though. We also have a very old-fashioned hardware shop where you can buy screws, washers, hinges etc singly or by the dozen & they wrap them up in old newspaper! Sadly, that's on it's last legs too. It's cheaper to pre-package things & pay students to man the tills than have an assistant who knows what they're talking about! Strangely, there aren't any wine shops round my way. There are a few offies, but there are also 2 Sainsburys, a Morrisons & a M&S, with a Waitrose a couple of miles away, so maybe we don't need them. Probably because everyone eats out in the wall to wall restaurants in the High Road! I did notice, just before Christmas, that if you walk from Chiswick to Hammersmith, along the High Road & King Street (the heart of May territory), every 4th shop sells booze, inclcuding one rather posh, well established wine shop. And not a single one of then had a 1/2 bottle of Lemon Vodka!

It's cheaper to pre-package things & pay students to man the tills than have an assistant who knows what they're talking about! You've just reminded me of something that happened when I used to work in the hobby shop in Birmingham. It was not that long after I left university the first time after my accident and I'd done a major running away thing (a bump on the noggin can have some very odd side-effects) because I wanted to be a long way away from Plymouth and all the things that reminded me of stuff that happened. Very strange really, the only person who knew where I was was my housemate and she was sworn to secrecy (unfortunately I hadn't explained that the secrecy didn't extend to my parents, so when I eventually got in touch, they were completely frantic...). Anyway, I digress. I was happily getting on with things, sorting myself out and all that malarkey and very much enjoying getting paid quite silly amounts of money to take home model kits and build them. I LOVED my job to distraction and one of my favourite customers was an old chap who used to be a "gentleman racer" back in the day (I would imagine he's no longer with us, but I hope his photo albums have gone somewhere they're appreciated. He used to drive an amazing old Bugatti). Anyway, one day I was rebuilding a radio controlled monster truck some little darling had managed to smash up when my old course tutor walked into the shop! I'm not sure who was more surprised. I, ever professional, greeted him with a cheery "Hello, Mike, how can I help you" and his response was something along the lines of, "Oh my god, what the f**k are you doing here?!". Charming
