Interesting main column. Although I seem to remember pubs were closing before the smoking ban. And Jezza, I hope you realise that now you've told everyone you drink a bottle of wine a night plus, you will probably be breathalyzed the moment you drive away from your house. Although I do agree with him.

The Passat column is brilliant. He's written a whole column about the car he's reviewing, which makes a change... and the conclusion... is lovely. The other column... sadly, A-E worked in the NHS for many years, and I could see this coming a while ago. It's like every other government department; choked by nonsense. I have a couple of friends who nurse who will find this article all-too familiar

Poor Jezza and Jezza Jnr. Glad it was just a migraine but it must have been terrifying for him for a while. We knock our NHS but at least we have them.

I thought this week's motoring column was brlliant! And what's more, there is acaddemic research t back up Jeremy's opinion... because it was one of the conclusions of the paper I wrote before Christmas!

I don't know where exactly I got this from, I don't know if I heard it on a show or read it somewhere, it was a long time ago, but I remember reading/hearing that people who are left-handed are more talented/gifted/creative, etc, than right handed people.
I have no idea whether there is any truth in that at all. But one of my fave men in the whole world, my childhood and still my hero to this day, Rik Mayall, is left-handed and he is all that and more.
Or maybe I am just being a bit romantic about the whole thing.

Jimi Hendrix and Paul McCartney are lefties too and very talented in music. I've always loved Rik too. Very talented, gorgeous, and funny as well.

I have no idea whether there is any truth in that at all. {snip} Or maybe I am just being a bit romantic about the whole thing. Actually, although the link hasn't been absolutely proven, it does appear that left-handed people are more inclined towards artistic and creative pursuits. The reason for this appears to be that the left side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is mostly concerned with logic, analytical thinking and the more rational thought processes. The left hand is controlled by the right side of the brain, which has been shown to be more involved with creative, random and intuitive processes. It doesn't automatically follow that all left-handed people will be right-brain thinkers, and the opposite is also true. However, there does seem to be a far higher proportion of left-handed people involved in the arts, which may suggest - but doesn't prove - that a left-handed person is more likely to be a right brain thinker. Certainly, it seems to be the case in my family; my uncle was a very talented artist and a skilled close-up magician, while my youngest nephew is most at home on the stage (and yes, they were both southpaws). It's interesting to note that this preponderance of left-handedness doesn't seem to apply to motoring journalists, certainly in the television presenting field; most of them appear to be right handed, including the TG3*. Then again, driving and vehicle maintenance are both predominantly 'left-brain' activities (as, oddly enough, is the technical aspect of playing a musical instrument, which is why it is possible for someone without much creativity to learn to play technically well). The creative aspects of putting a show like Top Gear together are much more 'right-brain' - and I believe both Richard Porter and (Eclair may need to put me right on this) Andy Wilman are left-handed. *You'll probably think I'm bonkers, but I have a bit of an OCD-ish tendency when it comes to handedness, and I tend to notice these things. I have no idea why it's so important to me - I'm virtually ambidextrous (I'm a Penwald as a result of my mother insisting I wrote with my right hand).

I completely get where you are coming from on that one and agree too.
I think I saw a piccie of Mr W writing with his left hand, on a blog piccie somewhere.

My mum's left handed and my dad is right so I do some stuff as a lefty (such as eating) and some as right handed (like writing). And some things I can do with either hand. ;D

Actually, that's something amusing about the JMB get-togethers I've been at... there have always been at least three of us eating left-handed!

I was always told that that was normal, for a mainly right handed person to hold their fork in their left hand, I don't, I am right handed and hold mine in my right hand and my knife in my left, it never felt comfortable or natural the other way around to me and subsequently I was told that I was the odd one out.

The same as me UM. I can't use a knife in my right hand at all in terms of carving with it. I'm the same if I played a musical instrument - I would always be left handed.

I can't clean my teeth with my right hand. It feels all wrong.
EDIT: *thinks about it some more*... maybe I should use a toothbrush instead...

Well, that is the odd thing, when I am chopping potatoes, I always hold the knife in my right hand, I couldn't do it with my left. My right hand does everything that I want to be doing at the time, whatever the task, eating, chopping, writing, etc.
Oddly, though, I can use the PC mouse with my left hand and that doesn't feel odd.

You're right. I'm the same. It is only when I'm eating I have to put the knife in my left hand. I can brush my teeth with either hand. Maybe this board attracts different and special individuals. ;D

I was reading in a mag the other week about someone who was in a TV show that was filmed over there and they had been robbed twice a gun point. I suppose its like any city you just have to stick to the right places.
