Sorry if this a double post. It's an old on-line interview I found and haven't seen before. www.squaremeal.co.uk/feature/lets-do-lunch-james-mayRarely far from our TV screens, Top Gear star James May is not short of an opinion or two. Over lunch at his local, the tousle-haired presenter tells Bill Thomas how kitchens are just like garages, why cooking is killing DIY and how the French intellectualise wine.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd be too blummin' embarrassed to walk into a pub and say "I know that XXX drinks here and wondered if you could pass this lil giftie across to them next time they're in here."

The Dove is a lovely, lovely pub. I'm impressed they got a table though - always packed, no matter what time of day it is - I've certainly never sat down in there. And from bitter experience, not one to visit when the boat race is on... (and before anyone starts, it's a PUB, short for PUBLIC HOUSE. I go there to drink beer and talk to my friends, not to stalk television presenters... )

See, I love fish cooked whole like that one James has, but yeah, sometimes a fish finger butty is the ultimate in comfort food. In fact, I could eat one right now... I really should have a lunchbreak...

The Dove featured in The Observer's "Guide To Summer Pubs" last weekend: * "On the Thames at the top of a bend offering great views east and west, this is arguably the best riverside pub in London. The tiny bar serves a range of Fuller's draught ales. When the sun's out nothing beats a pint of Honeydew ale, fermented with organic honey (£3.35 a pint). Stood here since the 17th century, customers have included Graham Greene, Ernest Hemingway, Dylan Thomas and Alec Guinness. James Thomson wrote the poem Rule Britannia while lodging here, and William Morris lived next door." So James is in good company.

I am with James on his choice of fish, I love sea bass. T'other half does a fabulous sea bass with salsa verde, it transports me into food heaven.
