The final one and as I almost expected not an explosive ending.
The Vauxhall VXR Bathhurst v the Maloo was a fun Oz film. Richard does do muscle car films in his own style and it was good. The filming was excellent and the split screen of the two going around the track *thumbs up*
The news a little bit longer this week and it was very cheeky. It felt a little more alert and I laughed through it. I thought the mention of Massa's F1 injoury was handled superbly as Richard was able to give first hand experience of it. Well done for handling in a sensible manner.
Now the advert making for the Scirocco. In theory brilliant idea as TG have the best cameramen in the business but this is TG and inevitably going to be too scripted. And in practice a bit predictable and really should have been put mid series either episode 4 or 5.
I did like the meetings with Nick and Margaret and the specs appeal moments. Clearly an idea to make them look clever pinched from St Trinians.
It was over long and they should have done something less drawn out. I'll come back to you later with ideas.
THE COOLWALL was back and really IMHO should have been inserted in shorter slots when the rubbish and daft things were inserted earlier on in the series. Go back to the early series 5, 6, 7 and you see this happening. Stop being idiots. If it ain't broke don't break it.
However it was funny and yay.
SIARPC with super petrol head Jay Leno (american but I'll overlook this for the moment) He was a very good guest and another non plugger. I loved his story with the undercover cops.
It was in a strange slot of 50mins into the show which threw me a bit.
Finally, this is the one everyone will be puzzled over, is this film about the Aston Martin V12 Vantage. The baby of the bunch with a big engine.
It was a pure indulgent film about a stunning car in a stunning setting. It was a brave and entrancing end to the series which isn't the usual TG way. The In car footage with Jeremy wasn't the usual in yer face commentary (which was very different). He was serious and he was making an emotive point about a time where maybe this type of car will no longer be viable. (I hope this isn't a metaphor for the show)
It made it's point in an understated manner which made more of an impact than a face full of explosions.
This is what TG does - it turns everything on it's head and when you think they've done it all, they do something incredible. The film may have been short but it was stunning. The cinematography was breathing taking. The In car shots were clever with the outside changing seamlessly with the quick changes from moors to forest and back again.
The final pull out shot throught the clouds was mesmerising and it was like a soul was leaving this world and heading into the next - the end not being the end, just a the start of something new.
Quite simply breathtaking and a bit bleak.
If anything I wanted more of Jeremy's thoughts about this and no doubt we will. I want an extended film of this and hear more of the engine. (I know not the point they probably wanted to make but there you go)
Overall an slight mixed ending to a mixed series. It wasn't all guns blazing and maybe this point in time TG needed to make this point with ending on an ambiguous note. If the right main film had been used then maybe this final film would have made a much more of an impact.
The episode which sang was the 6th one.
I'll come back with my thoughts on the series later.
NB- The music 'Brian Eno's 'Ending: The Ascent' for the final Aston film has probably more meaning than just the face value the film. I hope the greater meaning of the film comes out whether it's a warning to the Beeb, the car industry or something else that the TG team are making a point about. I still think it was a fabulous film and it was stark contrast from the usual madness.
