Fans of the Blue Flowery Shirt will be pleased to know that it has its own place in literary history, being as it is the subject of the intro to James's new book, Car Fever.
'I know, from reading comments on the electric interweb, (Hello, James! *waves*) that many people feel quite strongly about that shirt, log its appearances on TV, discuss its sartorial merits, and implore me to get rid of it. (NOOO!) But it isn't that simple'

I don't think anyone on here has ever requested he get rid of it have we? We may have said it should have an appropriate send off should James ever wish to dispose of said shirt but to get rid of - surely not ;D He'll be saying we want him to have a haircut next ;D

Oh hell no! No haircuts and no getting rid of the blue flowery shirt ever.

Certainly not! There have been rumblings (mostly from me, admittedly...sorry!) about the Pink And Purple Rugby Shirt Of Doom and how it would make lovely dusters, but the blue floral one must endure forever ;D
(Handwash it with Woollite, James, it'll last a bit longer!)

It will go down in history and have it's rightful place alongside the Bayeaux Tapestry and the like!

Perhaps James might find some preserving tips here, courtesy of a lady going by the name of Goldwyn Girl My vintage clothing is my "regular" clothing, but it is all hung on padded coat hangers, my cotton dresses are hand washed, starched and pressed . My crinolines also hang up but they take up a lot of room. My furs and winter coats are hung in breathable suit bags. My shoes are in hanging racks, boy I just love to hang things don't I.....hehe.......... My lingerie is kept in draws and hand washed and my linens which are also vintage are starched and pressed. I use these as one would a "new item" but I launder in the gentlest way, afterall, you can't pop down to Macys and buy a new one. My books and catalogs are on bookcases so they are easily accessible for daily reference. I use my vintage furniture and place settings, actually if it's not in a condition I can use I normally don't buy it. I want to enjoy my things so they are not merely a collection, they are a way of life even if it means I have to more careful and mindful of their care. I also travel with vintage luggage. But thats just me Just kidding James!

Mr May would I ever ask you to get rid of said shirt.....not on your nelly !!!!! ;D I'm having a bet it'll be around for the next hundred years, all I want to know is, how have you stopped the fraying around the cuffs and neck.....my guess is, there's a few around the old wardrobe ;D

Maybe someone could ask him this question the next time there is a book signing as it's on the front of the cover.

Perhaps you could put a request in to James. When the awful day finally comes and the BFS becomes unwearable he could donate it to this board who could cut it up into tiny pieces and sell it to the members for say £5 per piece to be donated to Help for Heroes or some other charity of his choice

He needs to meet up with someone who enjoys quilting. A few painful moments with scissors and all his beloved old shirts will become quilt blocks and he can lie under them at night

Er ......... "HE" could lie under them at night ............., better if he sold the quits to us and WE lay under them at night!

Puts hand up! I am an amateur quilter. But I would never forgive myself if I ruined the BFS.

The BFS will be immortalized in one way or another. It will however be a mystery until it falls to pieces.

I love that he chose to feature it on the cover, and make reference inside... I'd like to think it was a 'cheeky wink' to us!

Or he could have memorialized it for himself, since he knows the book cover will last longer than the shirt. And that's touching as well

I can't think of any other place where the BFS is discussed in all it's glory, where it's been and seen, and even have it's own board, so I'd say yes of course he is and if anyone tackles him, well not literally ;D do ask

First one to ask gets to keep the shirt ;D

For all we know, the one thing he can't stand is being asked about the shirt, and he'd look at you in disgust and walk away
