I've just noticed this letter in the RT for last week, referring to their interview with James for the first "Toy Stories". Can't say I've ever seen James as sexist, but...
"ANYTHING YOU CAN DO So "the point of being a man" is to "be able to have a go at anything"? Well, James May (RT, 24 October) the point of being a woman is to have a go at anything too...including sexist blokes! (Sandra from Birmingham)"
Hmm...mind you...s'pose it depends what you mean by "having a go"....

I saw that dit... luckily, they redressed the balance this week, by publishing...
James May a "sexist bloke"? Not from what I read. James appeared to be commenting on the lack of "blokes" doing practical things such as repairing mechanical things and (oh yes, this must be the sexist bit) cooking. In his Airfix Spitfire episode of Toy Stories, he encouraged the girls as much as the boys. Both sexes enjoyed hands-on model building. Surely a sexist man would have had the girls brewing tea and baking cakes?" Paul Finley, Liverpool'

I'm glad about that, Liz - haven't even had chance to open the RT this week, having a new kitchen fitted and have been living in a building site. Don't know where the papers/magazines are!

So was I dit!... was infuriated by the stupid woman's letter, and the RT for giving it page space!... Just delightfully surprised it was a male who leapt to James' defence! ;D BTW, good luck with the new kitchen... I'm not jealous at all!

I'm pretty sure it's a reference to that interview that appeared in the Mail about how being a man means you don't act helpless because you think it's charming. www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1204694/If-stuff-bloke-youre-sperm-warm-says-Top-Gears-James-May.html"'I think a proper bloke is someone who can have a go at and be competent at anything. I get really p***ed off at the idea that blokes are blokes, and they're useless and can't do anything but drink lager and look at girls in Zoo magazine. That stuff is harmless. I find Zoo and Nuts quite funny, actually. I like reading them. But the idea that it's somehow endearing and cute to be a hopeless bloke drives me up the wall."

Honestly! *exasperated sigh* I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if people would just pay proper attention to what James writes and says, they would be fully aware by now that he is one of the least sexist men on the entire planet.

I think it was fair to say that, because that's what men are.
Some people should stick their head in the sand.

It can work the other way round too - goodness knows I've worked with enough women who will bat their eyelashes and wail if they have to do something like carrying a heavy box

I suppose you could take it as sexist if you read things into it.... if he's saying "Be a man and learn to do things ... don't be a woman and act helpless until someone does it for you." But I don't think that's what he was saying.

LOL If the girls on the air-fix challenge are any thing like teenage girls round here they would have had James for breakfast if he was sexist. And last time i looked he was still in one piece so i take it he a OK guy.

Personally I don't think James is sexist - although actually I think almost all men are sexist and really can't help themselves being sexist deep down (ie. they can't help but consider us weaker as we are generally physically weaker but ONLY physically). Sometimes comments he makes are misconstrued. But it was possible to misconstrue that particular comment by people that want to and some do so love to misconstrue.
Does that make sense? I must sound pretty 'right on' !

Exactly. People are always willing to hear what they want to hear, or twist words to suit their needs. Our boy-o seems to me to be a level-headed type who is as comfortable with ladies in the driver's seat and garage as in the kitchen, not to mention that he's willing to spend time in all of these places as well! (Must make sure to have wine on hand when he pops 'round to cook for me ). Maybe it's a weird typo. He's not sexist, but he is sexiest! ;D
