;D ;D I totally agree. The snow has disappeared up here now but after spending 5 days following dithering idiots in cars the size of rollerskates with absolutely no idea of how to cope in the circumstances, I almost bought some humungous bull bars to fit to the Ford so that I could give them a helping shove (into the nearest ditch ;D)

I'd say it's fine ;D It means we all get to have a go about it, and I get to post this numpty in a BMW 3 series who thought he could carry on regardless. Unfortunately, you don't get the previous quarter of an hour of swearing, rolling backwards, and narrowly avoiding a car coming out of the car park just behind where I was standing...

No names were mentioned ;D Apart from the current FWD truck, the best motor I ever had for driving in the snow was my old 1.3 Mk.3 Escort Estate. We were totally snowed in up here about 15 years ago and it was the only thing that got out of the village to take my mates husband to work at the power station. There again, it might have been my fabulous driving that was the key rather than the car ;D ;D ;D

It is lashing down with snow again now, but even I'm not stupid enough to push my luck too far tonight. (What a time to have my 4WD Nissan locked away in the garage )

Got to agree with you Lew. Although my brother says FWD is better in snow and ice. But then I wouldn't know as my little old Fiesta is tucked up in bed and is going nowhere. I have enough entertainment with my neighbours spinning all over the place, to not provide any myself. ;D ;D

It's snowed up here again too. I was supposed to go into the office in Blackpool but made an executive decision not to bother It took 1 hr 15 mins to do the 6 miles into my office in Lancaster It's still snowing and someone has just said that we can expect a load more around lunchtime. My manager has already emailed me and told me to go home whenever I like so I feel an early finish is on the cards too ;D

I was quite surprised when she said that too. Then I got an email from the Comms Team telling us that they have already closed the office in Warrington because of the bad weather and were keeping a watching brief with a view to further closures so I think that was why she told me to go if I wanted to.

I also have had an unexpected study day at home. it took my little MG four hours this am to travel 2 miles after which I called it a day and returned home (only took 2 hours to get home?) . It dosen't seem to be abating here so may be similar tomorrow, so why do I feel so guilty for not managing to get to work? .

Inky, you're probably the board member nearest to me! Don't feel you have to offer details, but are you North, South, East or West of Lancaster? I was North of it over Christmas and the snow was pretty bad then. We've even had it on the coast where I am today, and that's pretty unusual.
I don't go back to work until Thursday and I'm already dreading it - a nasty accident on ice when I was a child makes me really spooked when the weather's like this.

Must say that I'm quite proud of my little old Celica - she did try to do a few twirls but she did get up the hilly bits!

I'm north of Lancaster in Carnforth. We haven't had loads of snow but it was enough to cause problems this morning. The really worrying thing is that just as the main roads have gone slushy, the temperature has really dropped and it is going to freeze. Tomorrow morning should be delightful You're right. We don't often get snow round these parts. It usually lands further north. You know it must be bad when we cop for it

My mum had to have the car pushed back down street when she tried to get to work. So sorry to any e-on works who's office has not been cleaned.

Inky, I'm south of Lancaster in Thornton, but I'm often up near Hornby visiting a friend.
Sounds like you've got much the same as we have down here. This is the worst - not deepest, but nastiest - I've seen it on the Fylde coast for absolutely years. My 3 cats, who like to go out to attend to their toileting (though they do have a litter box inside) are crossing their furry little legs as they hover in the open back door with me muttering "well, either go out or come in you x/27z;88|6!!!!"

I actually saw somebody with tyre chains on their car this evening. He's a very wise man - a lot wiser than the eejit in the (possibly RWD) sporty car that I saw sliding backwards down Amersham Hill on my way to the station

Did anyone see newsnight last night there was a clip from the 60s where this steam train was going towards a snow drifted that was taller than the train but it just smashed it way though. Why can't we do that today.

Did anyone see newsnight last night there was a clip from the 60s where this steam train was going towards a snow drifted that was taller than the train but it just smashed it way though. Why can't we do that today. Because the trains we have now are much more lightweight in construction. back then, trains were all heavy wood, steel and iron. Now they're light skimmy little things that can't scoop snow aside, but just get stuck in it. Saying that though, my train line is still running, though on a very reduced service. Today, while in town taking pretty pictures of snow, I almost got mown down by some FOOL in a BMW who had his foot to the floor, and was fishtailing all over the road. I shouted many a rude thing at his taillights, let me tell you. If he was trying to be impressive, he'll end up dead for his trouble.

A pillock of a neighbour in his BMW (is there a pattern? ) tried to reverse into the driveway (on a bit of a slope) and started spinning and churning up the road. He proceeded to block the entire road and has left his car elsewhere. It's crazy that people seem to have no common sense,

It would appear that BMW stands for something rude when it comes to the majority of their drivers. Mind you, it's not just us Brits who can't deal with the white stuff. I've been entertaining myself on youtube. Don't worry, no one was hurt (apart from their egos) and did I hear at the end someone say the word "Beemer"? www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6_ghixVN78&feature=related

As this is a public thread, suffice to say that BMW in my book has always meant "British Male Winkers" (feel free to replace vowels).

That vid is scarey! Why did the person in the first car to cause all the trouble keep hitting the accelerator I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it jammed on after the first impact

I live in an area where there is absolutely no excuse for not knowing how to drive in the snow - unless you just moved here from Florida or San Diego. Then we give you two weeks to get your bearings - if you don't, stay off the stupid roads so the rest of us can get there one piece...
I write to you from across the pond, from the bitter hinterlands of Buffalo, NY. Our weather can be utterly abysmal. It can snow from mid-October to mid-March. We once got 8 feet of snow in 4 days - I'm not exaggerating. Most of us just laughed (what else can you do, really?) and tried to locate our barbecues with depth charges. When the going gets tough, the tough grill steak.
So...knowing that, you'd expect that most of us would know how to drive in poor winter weather conditions. You'd be sadly mistaken. Most people around here drive like nincompoops and act surprised every time the weather turns evil, which it does at least once a week for six months!
It's a surprise, every single time. It's slippery! It's icy! It's snowing sideways! It's well below 0F! There's no visibility! It's JANUARY IN BUFFALO, ya dipstick! What did you honestly expect? Rainbows and tweeting birdies? Our weather has been so bad, it's made international news! (Look up Blizzard of '77 or more recently, Lake Storm Aphid, aka Arborgeddon.)
Every. Single. Time. I'm seriously starting to wonder if people's brains go into hibernation for the winter....

It's a comfort to know that we're not the only useless idiots when it comes to snow, ice and travel. I suppose over here we do have the excuse of maybe getting snow for a week at the most if that most years. Some years none, especially down here in the wet and windy south. Currently the BBC have a programme devoted to the "Big Freeze" as it has now become. So I suppose we make a big deal of it when it happens and aren't set up for it, unlike your area as you say. It's frightening to hear that people drive so badly when they really should know better.
