I agree with the above comments - XJS has pinned it really. Like many marriages, it's the differences that make it possible to bounce their personalities and foibles off each other. The glue that holds them together is the shared sense of humour.

The id (Clarkson) the ego (Hammond), and the superego (James)? Jeremy providing the raw energy and impulsiveness, James providing the reason and sense, and Hammond trying to keep balance? tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PowerTrio I'm sort of willing to go with that, except that it's Jeremy, not Hammond, at the center of it. Hammond is his sidekick and James is his foil.
