In certain ways it looks photo shopped, but then I look at the second photo and I'm not really sure.  If Radio Times did a real photo shoot for this cover, perhaps they'll put other photos from it up so we can compare better. |

There's something weird about the proportions. Hammond is too tall compared to Jeremy, and their heads seem too large.
Maybe it's the comically-oversized clothing they're wearing

I picked up my copy of this today and firstly there is a gorgeous picture of James on Sunday's page, he's still in the chair only positioned slightly different, i wish I had a scanner  Anyway, good article and now i feel ever so slightly embarassed I didn't know Clarkson and Willman were school mates   (feel free to give me detention someone :  I love the sentence.. The trio aren't play acting the relationship, says Willman. "Driving back after a shoot, the three of them in a car is a great journey because it is a very funny place to be. The pi** taking is monumental. I'd pay a million pounds to be on that journey too ;D |

What's odd for me is that when I shifted from Top Gear fandom to James May fandom (with a quick stop at Hammond fandom in between), I thought "Who is this intelligent man and why is he putting up with these clowns?" And as I've come to know him better over the last year, and understood more about his personality and how his mind works... I'm still baffled. In fact, I understand their friendship less than I did before, because for all I can tell it just shouldn't work. I don't see how he can have such a close and apparently genuine (do their kids actually call him "Uncle James"?) bond with two people whose personalities are so different.

Those pictures *grins* It reminds me very much of when I dressed up as a schoolboy for an Old Time Music Hall production a couple of years ago! It still worries me to this day, that my oldest friend from school (and her mother) didn't recognize me until I started speaking ;D
I must buy that tomorrow. I meant to today, but I was running short of time.

My best friend since junior high school is the exact opposite from me in so many ways - politics, religion, education, men etc. Somehow it just works. Been a mystery for over 27 years!! ;D |

I think it works because, as a group, they are the perfect triumvirate, and it is their differences that allow this to happen. It is a bit like a scalene triangle; unequal in sides and angles, but still a triangle. Here's another way I see it. If you imagine their collective friendship as a spectrum, Jeremy and James occupy either end of it, and Richard is somewhere in the middle. Sometimes their personalities clash, but their positions on this metaphorical spectrum never change. This allows the friendship to be maintained, despite the contrast in their personalities, as none of them is stepping on the toes of the others. This friendship 'spectrum' was demonstrated very well in the challenge where they built the Caterham kit car at Knockhill, in series eight. What was evident there was the contrasting personalities of James and Jeremy clashing frequently, with Richard 'United Nations' Hammond in the middle, trying to keep the peace between the two warring factions! This collective behavioural pattern has been displayed elsewhere on TG, but never so well as in this particular challenge. It makes it one of my favourite challenges to date. The psychology involved is fascinating! Sorry if all this sounds a bit obscure! I wasn't sure how else to to express it. |
