Silly Simone woman. I suppose I'm not allowed to build a Meccano Spitfire because that might possibly count as 'playing', and women are obviously far too grown up and sensible to do things like that. Bah. When we stop playing, we may as well stop doing everything. Silly cow. I am going to have to watch Toy Stories again now! There is a quote there about starting to grow up is starting to prepare to snuff it!

Great article! ;D One of his best, IMHO. It's actually in The Observer, rather than The Guardian, but they share the same website. Thanks for posting it, Violet. I wonder if anyone ever found that glider... Ah! Silly me - I really ought to look a bit more closely next time! But yes - I thought it was delightful and definitely one of his best. That bit about the glider had me rolling! Two grown men squinting forlornly as their dear glider sails away, LOLOL. ;D ;D

Bloody hell - I think we were separated at birth! I have even lost a remote control plane over the roof of a neighbours house and had to go and ask fo it back - at 47 years old! 'Can I have my plane back please? Its in your garden!' Wires have to be tidy. Screws slots need to be at the same angle. Things need to line up. Things that need to be central must be central, I will have a go at any task - even if it takes me ages and ages, but I can always say I did it. I will buy a special tool to do just one simple job - It will come in handy for something else later (and if I can't find the right tool, I will make something that will do the job!) I will take stuff apart to see if it can be made better/stronger/faster/lighter. I visited a new toy shop yesterday - just for a look around. OCD? No! Its just doing it right! Where do I join this club?

I am going to have to watch Toy Stories again now! There is a quote there about starting to grow up is starting to prepare to snuff it! I remember that. It was in James's interview in the Extras section. James said that someone at Legoland in Denmark had said to him, "The day you stop playing is the day you start getting ready to die." I loved that.

Well, my sig is longer than that, but it seems to work OK! ;D Rather appropriate for this discussion, too!

I'm loving this discussion and also the new series.. "The day you stop playing is the day you start getting ready to die" very profound. That's one of the reasons why I like working with young children, they have this urge to just play. I love seeing that in the TG guys on telly and, in some good moments, Mythbusters also convey that enthusiasm. I think I need to bring out the lego once again.. Oh wait, I gave it all away to my little cousins. Time to buy a new airfix model ;D (No, the first one wasn't inspired by James at all )

That clip of the picnic table made me laugh like a drain, twice - once when the table started moving and again at the end, which I've seen before but is much funnier in context.

My nephews occasionally pester for it but I think they've given up now ;D They have the train set, not they they ever use it.

So, this is what I get for trying to "play and experiment" (no, none of this is NC related): washing up liquid in my eyes. The bottle has an interesting plug/cap sort of thing so I was watching it while I pushed the cap/plug down and a bit of liquid went squirt right up into my eyes. I'll tell you it hurts and I feel about as stupid as James pointing a rifle at his face in the TG north pole ep. OK, maybe a bit less.

LMAO!! ;D Well, at least that rifle didn't go off, unlike your bottle! Why on Earth didn't you point the bottle away from you?!

I know, I know... I was just interested to see how exactly it works and how the parts fit together when it closes. Simple curiosity...

Please excuse the cross-threaded reference here, but TOH's Mother puts the washing up liquid away in the cupboard as well...

I've started doing that recently as well, but only because the new bottle I've just bought is bigger than the others I've used in the past, and thus takes up a bit too much room near the sink for my liking. Yes, I know I'm weird, but I've learnt to live with it!

See, I'd have kept the old bottle and decanted some into it, the kept the big bottle in the cupboard.
Also, I suspect that TOH's Mother's kitchen is about the same size as the entire downstairs of your house, the workspace really isn't an issue!

Feel free to come and visit sometime, MF, so you can determine that for yourself. Also, I'd be very happy to introduce you to my uncluttered kitchen worktop, so you could then claim to have seen one in the wild at last! ;D By the way, I wouldn't have decanted the contents of the new bottle into the old one, because it was a different liquid. Yes, yes, I know already.... ;D

I'd never mix different liquids either, because that would just be wrong. It would give a nice colour effect though, when you have different colours. The one we use now (it's still the bottle we bought on holiday) is blue, the one we usually have is green. Would it blend? Would one liquid sit on top of the other? Would it give a foul smell? *wants to go and experiment* I love the fact that we're now discussing housekeeping issues here on the JMB *chuckles*

Loved the article and picnic table clip. It's whetting my appetite - don't know when I'll be able to see it but it'll be iplayer. Approached the subject of recording the Man Lab and Man Crumbs was not happy as it clashes with Downton Abbey and despite pointing out the repeat info on the latter, he's not happy. He even said - 'you can watch it on iplayer'. He is master of all remotes and TV is his domain. I can see he does not understand why I should want to watch a prog which is designed for men - or so he thinks. I can't understand how he can bear to miss it - I know he would love it.
I know this saga is boring but I can't discuss this with anyone else! Only you lot truly understand my frustrations!

Oh crumbs, how annoying this must be I can only imagine. Please don't feel that you're boring us with this, it's one of the things the JMB is for if I'm correct. It sounds like mr crumbs still feels very threatened by James.. Good that you're able to use iplayer (I can't, since I'm outside the UK), but it must be blah not to watch together since you think mr crumbs would actually like it...

I hate waiting for things to play in the UK. 12 hours feels like such a long time.
Is Colin an actual person, or a generic name he uses for all his friends?

Colin is Colin Goodwin, as far as I know. He works for Autocar Magazine, doesn't he? Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.

and I decant the dregs of everything into the new container - washing up liquid, washing liquid, tomato sauce - I dont care what the colour is , or the make is, it all goes in the new bottle!
Maybe its because I hate throwing stuff away!

I always rinse the last bit of sauce out of the bottle with hot water. Don't worry, I don't waste it - it gets slung into a stew or a casserole or some such something. For example, tonight I'm making braised pigs' cheeks in cider with root veg. If I had some dregs of ketchup, they'd go right in there.
