Knowing James's interest in this form of transport, perhaps he might think of treating himself? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a flying car! Have you ever been stuck in a queue of traffic and wished you could simply take-off into the sky and avoid the jam? Well, now you can! Categorised as a 'light sport' aircraft, the first flying car is going into production in the US after air authorities declared it legal to take-off. The Terrafugia Transition which can legally drive on the road and has a 100bhp engine capable of powering it along at 90mph. And, thanks to its folding wings and rear facing propeller it can cruise through the air at a speedy 115mph. One of the major advantages of the Transition over ordinary light aircraft is safety - in the event of inclement weather, it can simply drive home instead of either being grounded or flying in unsafe conditions. It also saves pilots from having to sort out a lift home from the airport. Costing a reasonable £130,000, the flying car requires owners to have a license of just 20 hours flying time, making it much easier to obtain than a full private licence.

I think James would like one of these. I wonder if it does vertical take offs and landings like the Harrier Jump Jet, or if it needs a bit of a runway? If it does need to gather speed before take off, it could prove a bit difficult in getting you out of traffic jams, where I think I would need it most, although I can see other benefits of having one.

I wonder if it does vertical take offs and landings like the Harrier Jump Jet, or if it needs a bit of a runway? At just AU$250,000, give or take, I'd say the answer is no. VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) costs a fair bit more than that... *removes aircraft geek cap* still, flying out of traffic jams. It would be nice, wouldn't it? Chariset has a point. James, I think it's syndicate time! ;D
