As many of you know I was struggling with the decision when to put down my elderly and senile dog Josie. Having just put down my dog Shakespeare and wanting to give myself some more time I decided that as long as Josie was not in real physical pain we would put off the inevitable a little bit longer. The other night I noticed that she was limping a little bit. By the next day she was favoring her leg completely and I immediately called the vet who told me to bring her right in. After an exam the doctor told me that she had torn her cruiate muscle, which, generally, holds the knee together. It is an injury that is severe enough and painful enough that normally surgery is recommended. Given her age and size surgery was not an option. The only real medical treatment would have been to put her on anti inflammatories and pain killers. Given her age, and all of her other problems, the vet said that she thought it was Josie's time and I agreed. So, sadly, I had her put to sleep. My husband wanted to be there but he was at a ball game in the city and couldn't have made it back for a few hours. I called him on the phone and he said he understood that we shouldn't wait because she would have been in pain. Here is the last picture of me and my little girl that we took at the vet's office. Josie always sat next to me on the arm of the sofa. That spot is empty now and it makes me feel quite sad. It will take a while to get used to no one being there.

Thank you so much, everyone, for the condolences. It really does help me to feel a little bit better. It has been lonely without my doggies but I think it will be a while before we acquire any more dogs. We want to travel some and that is easier without dogs. And I have my wonderful cats who keep us company - all be it in a different way. Very different from doggies but it is special all the same. Thanks again everyone!

We were coming home from dinner pulling up to our drive and we saw a small dog running towards us in the road. I got out of the car and the dog ran into our yard and started to run into our neighbor's yard but stopped and came back to bark at us. My husband went inside to get the leftover dog treats that we have and I stayed outside talking to the dog. After enough coaxing, and enough treats, we got close enough to read the dogs collar. The clinic it was from said Louisiana. Our neighbors truck has Louisiana plates on it and the dog's bark sounded like our neighbor's dog's bark. (There are trees and high hedges separating the two properties so we had often heard their dog but not seen it.) After knocking on the neighbors' door and discovering they weren't home we hooked the dog up to the lead that is in their yard. I wanted to bring him in the house but I don't want to freak out my cats. I've been going out side every 15 minutes or so to check on him and to see if they are home yet. When they do get home I'll check with them to make sure it is indeed their dog. I think I'll also offer them the rest of the bag of treats since he really seemed to enjoy them.

What will you do if it isn't their dog?

Firstly: I can't imagine how your houses look like! I mean, you've never seen the dog and.... Are they semi-detached houses and do you neighbours never walk their dog? Anyway, yea, I'm curious too: what if it's not the neighbor's dog and nobody is going to ask for the dog, Im sure you'll keep it, as it would feel like some sort of god sent the dog to you to take a little grieve away? It's AWESOME that you looked after it so well, always good to hear, even though I already know you love animals Let us know if the dog belongs to your neighbours!

When my husband suggested hooking the dog up to the neighbor's lead I asked him "What if he's not their dog?" his response was "Then they'll get a big surprise." It turned out that it was the neighbors' dog. I was checking on the dog every fifteen minutes or so until the neighbors got home. When they got home I immediately went over and asked them if it was their dog. (If it hadn't been their dog there is a good chance that we would have kept him if we couldn't have found his owner. I would have taken it as a sign that he was meant to be our dog.) The neighbor said that the dog had gotten out earlier in the day and that they had chased after him but couldn't catch him. They said that he keeps getting off of the lead they hook him up to outside. But this time he snuck out the back door.
It is kind of sad that they have been our neighbors for a few years now and until now I had never really met them. But now that I have met them they seem like nice people (even if they are a little careless with their dogs). To answer your question, nat, the houses are two separate detached houses with a small yard and high bushes in between. So we don't see much of each others' properties when we look out the window or stand in the back yard even. They don't really walk their dogs so much as hook them up to a long cable lead in the back yard and let them walk around by themselves. It doesn't seem to be the best solution though because the dogs keep getting off of the lead. Apparently, at the last house they lived at they had some land and were somewhat isolated (not on a main street like they are now) and their dogs never wandered off of the property. They don't seem to get that they live on a major road and if the dog goes out on the road he is likely to get hit. I tried to gently express that to them. I didn't want to seem nasty because they are our neighbors and I don't want to cause a row. But if the dog gets out again I'll have a "firmer" conversation with them. He's a sweet dog and I don't want anything to happen to him.

Yessss, that's what I meant: if it hadn't been the neighbour's dog, it was meant that he'd to become a part of your family!) Yea, careless indeed, I firgured they were, after reading what you have written I think it's really sad that they don't walk their dogs often. Very good of you that you;ll have a firmer conversation with them if their dogs gets out again! It's quite funny, never expected to find anybody else that hardly knows their neighbours! Thought I was the only one - as usual ;D

I think it's a shame the doggie thread isn't a locked (only for members) thread, since the pics I post aren't for everbody's eyes.. Anyway, yesterday my mum went to her friend who lives about 15 km away from us and I went with her, as there's beautiful woods and an awesome golffield there were I can run/walk/be crazy with my dog Kaiya. We couldve gone on our bikes, but since mine was broken, we went with the train. ;D

All these lovely doggie photos are making me want to get one of my own. I'll have my own place in (hopefully) a couple of months' time so I could get a dog if I wanted, but I don't know if I have the space. I'll probably have to settle for fish, at least to begin with.

LOL @ Pie. Well, as long as you are capable of walking often and not only go out for a quick pee, you can have a dog pretty much everywhere! Lovely pics, SLFriend!!
