It looks as if one of Jeremy's ideas is actually being taken seriously. Two MPs have signed an Early Day Motion (one that asks for a topic to be discussed in Parliament as soon as possible - they often never get to that stage and can be trivial or serious). edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=42253&SESSION=905

I don't drive so could someone please tell me how far over the limit do you have to be to set a camera off? Because surly if the limit is 50 mph you should not be driving at 60mph, are camera in areas where the speed limit is unclear because of the sighs are not clearly displayed?

There used to be an unwritten 'rule' that you were allowed 10% of the limit so up to 33mph in a 30 limit, 77mph on motorways(70 limit) etc. However, speed cameras seem to be set at whatever levels councils want. In my area people have been busted at 31 and 32mph, and of course not all speedos are 100% accurate so drivers may not think they are exceeding the limit. There is also at least one camera in my area where the limit drops from 40 to 30 and the camera is about 30-40 feet further on, so anyone unfamiliar with the road who slows late will get caught.
There are also many roads, again some in my area, where indeed there are very few speed limit signs and if you are joining a main road you can go for miles without knowing what the limit is. It would be so easy for the limit to be put on the camera so you would keep your speed down, as Jeremy has suggested.
At the moment it does look as if local authorities are wilfully making it as easy as possible for drivers to be fined, rather than giving them every support in sticking to the speed limits. I'm behind Jeremy and the MPs all the way on this one!
*climbs off soapbox. Phew!*

Blimey! ;D I wonder if it will be mentioned on TG during the next series. I can imagine Jeremy being rather smug pleased.

Thanks, Dit. Now I understand why this would be a useful thing for motorists.
Here in the States, when a road joins another, there is a speed limit sign to let you know what the speed is on the road you've just turned on to. Or at least there usually is. However, if the road has a long stretch with no other roads joining, you can go for a long time without seeing a speed limit sign. But there are practically no speed cameras. I think there are some target areas trying them out, but I've never run across one.
Go Jeremy! ;D ;D
