Perhaps I'm biased (only a bit ) but I think that James was right to request a business seat. It's what his company has paid for after all. Not exactly diva behaviour, this, if you ask me. Oh, and I'm sure mr May doesn't need 4 seats. Or the most recent pictures of him will shock us all... ;D

Thanks for the link, lew, but - oh dear (sigh), I really didn't want to read that. It's what one always hopes isn't the case about a person one admires. He's always seems so grounded and natural, but a little bit of me does wonder whether being so globally famous can change a person.
I would like to think his annoyance was what anyone would feel at being downgraded from business class, and a lot of people in that position would probably get a bit shouty, but I hope this isn't typical of him.
As the article is dated yesterday and refers to 'last week' I imagine it's quite possible that was the plane bringing him back to the UK for Wednesday's filming, which might explain why he seemed a bit subdued and didn't appear at the break.

He's only human, everybody is entitled to the odd stroppy outburst. We all have days when we wish everyone would sod off just a shame that when he does it it gets put in the papers for it. I think it makes me like him more knowing that he's not the nice quite man and has a bit of fire in his belly.

I would have done the same, If you pay to fly business class they should put you in business class. How hard is it to work out how many seats you have on a plane when you are taking bookings.

I think anyone would get annoyed, and rightly so, if they were bumped from business to cattle class without notice. That being said, I'd be more annoyed if my family and I were forced to downgrade to make way for a celebrity. I hope they were compensated. Judging by the way the article was written, they're just searching for a story and trying to make him look like the bad guy. So, even if what's written is completely true, I won't believe it because they're trying so hard. "James May was an arrogant oaf - a complete diva. He lost the plot and started ranting about being given special treatment." Oh pah-leeease. Was Jeremy the said BA insider? ;D

I feel a bit sad as well Dit reading that article, and like you hope that the "global fame" has not gone to James's head a bit From all other reports of anyone meeting him he seems very normal and down to earth. Maybe he was just caught on a bad day in a bad situation and was tired / not feeling his best. If I was booked on a Business Seat for a long flight and was told I had to down grade I would have kicked up a fuss as well.... this has nearly happened to me once...... I had boarded the plane and there was already some one in my Business Class seat - which I had prebooked and checked in on line, and when checking the boarding pass we had both been issued with the same seat but there were no other seats spare in Business! I turned to "diva" mode myself and went mad refusing to move as it was not my fault - I was just stood in the aisle of the aircraft. The Purser went off to see who was supposed to be where and it transpired that I was the correct seat holder as I had checked into that seat on line and the check in desk had issued the other person the seat by mistake. If I had been moved to Economy I would have definietly had gone really really diva not because I am a snob or always travel Business - I don't, rarely infact and on this occassion I had upgraded using the airlines loyalty points as I was travelling alone and it was a night flight so I thought I would treat myself - but because it was what I had booked and was expecting, and it was an airline error not mine.

Should have seen me in the bank a few weeks ago, my perfect halo slipped no one is perfect, let alone him as much as we'd like to think he is. And if I'd have paid my money for business class and didn't get it, I daresay it'll have been me again having another hissy fit ;D

No. Mmmm. Don't know my take on it really. It's all in the reporting of course so no doubt 50% of it at least is incorrect. I'd probably have a strop too of course, but then I have only travelled business class twice in my life so I'm used to being cattle. Problem is that it was one of those circumstances where you have to sort of grin and bear it and then ask for a refund. I'd have thought James would be good at the stiff upper lip thing.

I kinda wish I hadn't read that either, but the timing of it? I don't suppose that last-minute hitch was that massive blizzard we had in the states that stopped all activity for a day or two and f**ked up air travel everywhere, was it? Seems likely.
But one bad press article after...nearly ten years of being that famous? It happens. He probably just had a long exhausting day.

Very stiff upper lip, though maybe cattle class was full of screaming kids ;D and being poked and pulled and eating nothing but bread rolls filled him with an evil moment ;D

I suspect he did have a whinge - as people have said, if you don't get what you're expecting it's only natural to get annoyed. Knowing the way James chunters under his breath you wonder whether most of what he said wasn't meant to be heard, and has got blown out of all proportion. Bit like something else that has happened this week but for the life of me I can't quite remember what... Which also makes me think that any other week this wouldn't even have got a mention.

One hour and fifty minutes to Italy in economy class full of fat, beer-swilling chavs and their feral, screeching brats (Brits, obviously, not Italians!) was quite enough for me this summer - and that's when I'm travelling for leisure purposes with my iPod turned right up to block out the racket. I wouldn't fly long-haul unless I could afford to do it in 'posh' class - which is why I holiday in Europe every year.
The thought of ten hours in economy is horrific under any circumstances, let alone when you have work to do... If you've paid for Business, you should travel Business, end of.

I wonder what the family who paid premium prices but were bumped down to economy, because James put his foot down, thought of it? I suspect they were paid off pretty well - I hope so anyway - otherwise I feel rather sorry for them. After all, they paid for luxury too.
Having said that you should get what you pay for. I'm just not sure he's any more important than any other premium paying passenger when the ninnys at BA overbook.

I must admit, if I had a busy schedule (which all of them must), I had writing to do (which takes concentation) so had allocated the ten or so hours for the task and I found I was about to be bounced into the general melee, I think I could get a mite tetchy.

Been there, done that!
I had paid for a certain grade of ticket, and I wasnt going to settle for anything other than that grade of ticket! Simples!
Also - if someone is in my seat, then they have to get out of my seat and find their own (I know that the airline had allocated the same seat twice in this case - but you get the idea!)

The News of the World have it online. I didn't open it cos I'd have to give my email address and there ain't no way I'm giving that! 'James May's Strop Gear' is the headline possibly and they say he blew a gasket (very Sun I must say) - saw this info on google summary. James blow a gasket? I doubt that somehow!
It'll be forgotten by Tuesday. (Let's hope so anyway).

"Let he who is without sin..." The only reason I see why this is news is that Mr May is a famous face. Good grief, I myself got stroppy in a supermarket queue the other day, and nobody is reporting that.

Whether you travel once every blue moon or spend the majority of your life in airports, it's not easy. Travel, airlines, luggage claim and customs were all designed with an annoyance factor built-in! Blizzard or not, faulty plane or not, the airline has a responsibility to its passengers. Period. That's why they fly. You pay for business class, you get business class. That's the deal. I love the way the article made the people who were downgraded seem as though they had paid for extra luxury and James hadn't. As meimichan said, after ten years of having his face and name plastered everywhere, this is the first real blooper the press has come up with. Slow news day!

1. If this was DFW airport, he was less than an hour from where I live! Argh!
2. If this happened recently (as in within the last week) there are mitigating circumstances. The weather has been unusually bad -- a lot of ice and snow. To give you some perspective, I worked Monday this week -- and only Monday -- the school was closed Tues-Saturday. Temperatures were below freezing until a thaw began on Friday and then an all-day thaw Saturday finally cleared the roads. Flights have been canceled all over the place, so the airlines are hurting, and I have no doubt that tempers are short on both sides of the counter.
3. I think the fact that this is James, "the mild one," makes them more likely to think this is a story. They're playing on the "oh, he seems nice but he's really a prima donna" angle.
4. What does "stroppy" mean? Belligerent?
