I had a Morris Minor Traveller, 1961 vintage, that was too ratty to be a classic. That didn't have a clock either. Or a radio. Here it is:

My first car ... I daren't say what it was for fear of much ridicule. It was white with brown vinyl seats, which when hot burn you,and your skin stuck to them which was not pleasant. It was a 1300 L, so no clock then. It had a manuel choke, which I got down to a fine art of knowing exactly how much I needed for it to start. It was M registration and my Dad bought it for me when the world was all black and white and we ate coal - does that sound familiar. It was my passport to a freedom I'd never known before.

I'd already had a moped and several motorbikes by the time I got the car, but having the car was liberating in that I didn't have to lug my 20 stone boyfriend, who had just got himself banned, around on the back of a bike!

My first car was given to me by my dad too, when I was 20, almost 21. It was a Ford Ranger with 180,000+ miles on it. It had been my dad's commute to work car for years, it'd been hit on the front, back, and the side(I did that last one) and we never got them fixed, probably because it would've cost more than the car was worth. It was great. Nobody EVER cut me off, EVER. It was absolutely horrible in snow (I do live in snow-heavy areas), but I never put it in the ditch. I had some good times with that crunched-in rust bucket.

That Moggie was brilliant in the snow. What you can't see in the picture is that it had very non-standard fat 13" wheels instead of skinny 14" ones.
After he got his license back, there was a really heavy snowfall and my boyfriend was going round towing other cars out of ditches with it!

My first car was 25 years old by the time I was given it - it was my Grandad's old car. It had manual choke, no radio, windows that were vertical and opened halfway but didn't shut again and the heater was shot. My life it was a right bu**er to drive and I had to wear two coats in the winter. When it was finally towed away, Mr Crumbs wore black. He was driving a Triumph Dolomite Sprint by then, so he had a cassette player and an overdrive button which excited him very much. He didn't have to deal with the 'tank' as I called it - I have to say I did feel pretty indestructable in it, it was a solid car! It was a Wolseley 1500 www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/50_wolseley1500.htm

Old (original) Mini, bought for my 21st by my parents. It had sliding windows with moss growing on the felt but I loved it. Hardly any students had their own cars around then and it made me very popular!

I hope someday to actually own a car. I drive the company's pick-up truck. Mind you, it's 4-wheel drive and I can go almost anywhere. Park in the snowbank, drive right out again! It's mid-sized so it handles so much better than the big boys! ;D ;D
For my first car, I'd either want something completely wretched or completely wonderful. Of course, by the time I get one, I'll probably be able to afford wonderful! ;D

I'm still driving my first car - a 1996 Plymouth Neon. But I don't think he's much longer for this world...
