Interesting article in the Guardian about the scale of salaries paid by the BBC to it's presenters. It also mentions that many presenters, including Jezza, James and Richard, nowadays have formed service companies and work on a freelance basis. www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/03/bbc-pay-talent-stars-accountsThe guys are doing quite well, I'm happy to say.

I imagine the final figures after tax will be considerably smaller!
(I've actually just thought of something - was there not a flurry of car/motorbike buying going on earlier this year with the guys? Anything to do with getting it in before the end of the financial year?)

The best thing about being self employed is that you can claim VAT back on things you buy for your business and claim the rest as business expenses. Life has gotten ever so cheap, since I started mine ;D

In the US we would call that being an independent contractor, you get all the money without taxes and have to pay it when you file the next year. It can be hard to let go of those funds. I owe the IRS for tutoring kids because I was an independent contractor even though I'm a bottom feeder.

I wonder if the journo who penned this article would disclose his/her salary for all the world to see? I'm not sure what people actually learn from knowing a celebrity's salary.
Ho hum.... seems like the hardest working presenter on TG is paid the least.

I agree with you on that. I don't really understand why anyone needs this information. Although, I guess since the BBC is funded by tax payer money the public has a certain "right" to the information. My question when reading this was "Don't the guys deserve to be well compensated for their work?". I mean, yeah it is a great job that most of us would love to have. But they also do a lot of hard work for their job and spend a lot of time away from their families. That should be worth something right?

The issue of BBC presenters' salaries is a bit of a hot potato at the moment, so I suppose we can't be surprised that Guardian Media are writing about it. However, all they can get hold of are the annual accounts of each of their service companies, which are in the public domain anyway. These don't necessarily give an accurate picture of the guys' actual earnings.
