I've just been looking at the UKTV webpage about James, which I have to say is not 100% accurate, a bit of Wikipedia in there so I can't speak for its veracity! However, there was this reference to early TV appearances:
James....then turned up on breakfast telly some time later (after leaving Autocar) and was subsequently asked to present a Channel 4 motoring series.
Does anyone know any more about these, or whther they can be found anywhere on t'internet?

I'm not convinced about the breakfast TV thing - doesn't seem like a logical career move for him. If I remember, there was quite a gap between his leaving Autocar (on which he was a sub-editor) to appearing on TV, during which time he was honing his journalistic skills on Car magazine etc, and starving, according to James.
He joined the presenting team of "Driven" on Channel 4, but they sacked him after one series and replaced him with a woman - or that's what he says. I've never seen a clip of him on that show, but I'm sure some exist somewhere

I seem to remember that James once told in an interview that his first appearance on telly was indeed on a breakfast show. He was not the main presenter, but just doing the occasional car related segment. That then lead to him being asked for Driven.

I love his comment about the attitude he and Hammond share about buying cars
