Andy and Jeremy were at the same school, Repton, and together suggested a new format for Top Gear to the BBC when the original-style programme was axed. The two have been friends for years.
The lucky pants - there's at least one video somewhere on the JMB but I can't find anything just at the moment. Out of superstition, Andy wore the same underpants for every TG recording over the past few years. Recently they have virtually disintegrated so that the 'pants' bit is hanging onto the elastic waistband by a thread, but he was still wearing them each week.
Hope that's helpful.
Edit: I'm not very bright - the reference to the lucky pants is just below on the thread 'Andy's lucky pants', though there is another more recent one somewhere where he talks about them on an interview with Jezza and James.
