There didnt seem to be anything warrant shutting it to me! Some strong opinions both ways, and some factual observations - but nothing controversial or threatening!

There's nothing like a good old debate! Different opinions matter. Without opinion and thought we are basically in a police state. Has the JMB turned into the Stasi? Hope Not!

Im happy that it was shut. I think if it hadnt, I wouldve wrote my opinions and that would have caused other member liking me a lot less, because if I stand for something, I totally go for it. Just a little, short opinion: Horse racing is cruel - the horses should be playing in a field and feeling as if theyre completely free, away from duties mankind tells the horses to do. It's a fact that there's a bigger chance that the horse dies sooner than it would have if it had been living on a farmer's field or so. I must admit I know very little, so I dont know what James is gonna do at the Grand National, but I know Im not gonna support him whatsoever.

Without opinion and thought we are basically in a police state. Has the JMB turned into the Stasi? Hope Not! Thanks for that vote of confidence, Miss Burlo The JMB runs for the benefit of all its members, not just some of them. I was not the person who locked the thread, and I'm not sure it was necessary, but I think - for very much the reasons nat says - that it was probably as well to lock it to let the subject die before it did get heated and unpleasant. This site is for James and his fans, and the fans of his TG colleagues, to discuss his work and have fun. It's not the place to be engaging in such ongoing debates, especially when they can lead to bad feeling on the board. This is the way things are done, and the decisions of the admin team are certainly not up for open debate. Having said that, we're not the Stasi, or the Waffen SS or the KGB or any other organisation you might care to compare us with, so if you have a problem with anything the mod team do on the board, you are always welcome to bring it up with the Administrators.

Can whoever locked the National thread let me know please.
It will remain locked now but no doubt feelings are running high on either side of the (very high) fence. Not a fan myself by the way and never will watch it or support it but each to their own. We all have different emotions, sensitivities and moral codes and no, the JMB is not a police state but we do have to abide by certain conditions and rules laid down by Proboards and make decisions on whether or not some threads might be best shut so as to not cause undue offence or upset.
There is no doubt a Grand National forum somewhere if people want to debate the matter elsewhere.

Though having had a semi professional career with horses, I will not start a debate on the GN nor horses and the way they should be looked after in general. If anyone would like to discuss this matter or should have questions about this, feel free to send me a personal message on this subject.
I do, however, feel the need to respond on the matter of calling the JMB moderators / staff the Stasi, or somehow comparing them to this and other WWII organisations. I feel rather shocked reading this I must admit and I also find it really inappropriate to do so.
This has nothing to do with the fact that I live in Germany, but comparing closing a thread with the Stasi, who were "famous" for waging campaigns against the Jews (amongst other things), is something I personally find really inappropriate, I'm sorry.
This I had to get off my chest.

I think you are getting confused, which may add to your frustration The stasi were the German Secret Police. Nothing to do with WW2 at all. They monitored and told people what they could and could not to. I'm simply saying that without debate and voicing opinions then we cannot have a civilised society with democracy and liberty. (I know irony doesn't work well in writing) It's good to see that people care about the topic of horse racing and good to see how passionate people are. I personally think there are bigger things to deal with. I felt the same with the fox hunting ban in Britain. And on that bombshell....

Some say - a simple 'we didn't want it getting out of hand, and detracting from all things James May' would have done!

@missburlo: the WWII stuff I was referring to had more to do with the Waffen SS, but the Stasi also labelled the Jews als criminals and capitalists, you could say that, however formed after WWII, they still had some nazi style.
Anyway, enough about that, let's just drop it.
