I was a volunteer with a local animal adoption agency years ago and I adopted a guinea pig who had me pegged the moment she saw me. Her name was Maggie and she was a tricolor shorthaired little porker.
My favorite memory is when she ambled into my brother's room, I was coming upstairs, then I hear "Get out of my room, you pig!" and she raced across the foyer, squealing all the way. I saw her run across, we all heard the noise she made, and we all started laughing.
Other times if I was downstairs, she'd run to the top of the stairs(my room was upstairs), and pause at the top. If I wasn't around, she'd squeal long and loud and my dad would say I was being paged.
Mags learned to identify my dad's footsteps on the stairs early on as he'd always bring her something. He took care of her when I was in the hospital for a week and she was glad to see me back!
One time in the shelter a hamster got out and nobody told me. I got a huge fright when I see a tiny nose and whiskers point out at me from a supply shelf! Almost screamed.
There was an adult lop eared rabbit named Wilfred of whom I bonded with closely. He was adopted but he had such a bright personality I was in love! If I lay down on the concrete floor in the summertime, he'd jump on top of me and knead my back when I was facedown. It felt very good!
I also got to play with chinchillas. They're very odd looking creatures with very cold paws! The fur is wonderful and I always say the fur is better looking on the animals. Those chins treated me like a playground and I loved it.
Ferrets sleep pretty soundly. I was able to trim a ferret's claws while he was sleeping in his hammock! Keeping a ferret in a room with his natural prey, rabbits, wasn't a good idea though. Nothing happened, but still I'd want the ferrets in the office instead.
Mice and rats came through pretty regularly, often gerbils too. I do like rats, they make cuddly pets. The tail usually grosses people out though. I used to put a rat on my shoulder while I cleaned cages and he'd tickle me by sniffing at my ear.
I've still got many more stories about other animals, a childhood encounter with a bat, etc. Right now I have a dog and he's all the excitement I can handle.
