a fantasy question posed on a rally forum!
If the Top Gear boys entered a rally, what cars would they each choose?
I replied on that forum, but what cars do YOU think they would choose?

The easy two are Clarkson and Hammond
Escort Cosworth Porsche 911
but Mr May is difficult - DB9s are not allowed to rally in this country!
Would he go for old school, or high tech?

Hmm, I guess I'm on a different page. To me, "rally" conjures images of an event which, at least partly, involves off-road segments, possibly mud and snow. Cars like the Impreza, Evo, and Quattro are usually used. Not 911 or DB9 friendly.
So enlighten me, how is "rally" used in your question?

James seems to like dedicated sporting cars (as opposed to commercial sportscars). He also seems to have a sneaky fondness for French cars when he thinks nobody's looking, and he did end up with a Citroen for the Rallye Classico Isla Mallorca. I can imagine him somehow getting hold of a Citroen DS3 WRC and having a lot of fun with it But yep, to me rallying is all about different stages and surfaces too, including gravel and tarmac - but I did grow up on Top Gear Rally Report. Rally Finland is my absolute favourite because of the pretty much guaranteed snow...

Mr May....the Mini rally car he drove in the last series. He seemed to adore it! A 911 surely isn't suitable for rallying. I'm with you Fizzy...need definition of rallying.

For Wyvern Rally Finland Rally Sweden Rallies are held on all sorts of road surfaces - mud, snow, gravel, tarmac! The 911 coped better on tarmac events, and the Aston is just a perfect tarmac rally car (but dirty rally cars aren't the image that either of these manufacturers are keen to be linked with, so they are private cars) Due to technical regulations, the Aston is banned from UK events, so only competes overseas! 911 Aston Martin (being demonstrated - not in actual competition!) And the car that brought about the 4wd turbo era of rally cars and made 2wd rally cars obselete overnight - I give you the Audi Quattro! And then - if I ever got the opportunity to buy any rally car in the world - this is it BMW M3 - E36 But I do have a road going version of one of these

I'm with you Fizzy...need definition of rallying. the mini isn't such a mini these days! and - latest news - Mini (or rather BMW) have pulled out of rallying, as have Ford! (edit - oh no - my 'new' 100th post has a mini on it! I hate Mini's! )

Thank you Flat. Steroidal Minis these days, eh? More like Maxis. Mini has pulled out? That was short-lived. Still think May would choose it. Back to 100 posts....well done!

Mini pulled out of rallying! Impossible! I know some of their new models are a bit girls' blousy, but the Cooper S and Works models (old Mini and new Mini) are born to drive that sort of terrain. Certainly the one James drove was a superb bit of kit.

It's sad that so many manufacturers have pulled out of rallying over the last couple of years. I think a big part of the problem, in WRC at least, is that a couple of years ago the commercial rights got completely ****ed over by a bunch of idiots who didn't know what they were doing. If nobody is going to see it, sponsors don't want to throw money at it, and if sponsors don't throw money at it, the teams can't run.
It's not fair *stamps feet*
Still, fingers crossed for more exciting rally cars at TGL next weekend. Last year, I nearly had a happy accident (which to be honest is the exact opposite from most of the accidents they were involved in) when they brought out a load of Group Bs to be driven, if not exactly in anger then at least a bit of a mood, around the indoor track. And yes, they did use the old TGRR theme music ;D
