Ford Puma signed by Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond auctioned in Chelmsford
A CHELMSFORD car auction has raised almost £12,000 for charity.
The auction, which had around 600 attendees and took place at Aston Barclay in the city's Drovers Way last Wednesday, saw 23 "old bangers" sold – benefiting The Automotive Industry (BEN) charity.
The charity, which offers practical, emotional and financial support to those who worked in the car industry, gained £11,930 thanks to buyers' efforts and a £1,500 donation from Aston Barclay.
The 23 elderly cars had taken part in the Bangers4BEN rally, which saw them drive from Porsche's UK headquarters in Reading to their German factory in Stuttgart – before braving the fearsome 13-mile, 170-turn Nurburgring track.
The cars then drove back to the UK – and lucky buyers had a chance to get their hands on a cheap deal and raise money for charity at the same time.
The automobiles, which included a Ford Puma signed by Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond which was auctioned for £575 and an MGF, auctioned for £450, which was painted as a Union Jack.
Other big sells on the day included a Volkswagen Golf Match that went for £1,450 and a Honda Civic Executive for £850.
Tom Mapes, group PR & marketing manager for the company, said: "It went really well – we had teams that took part in the rally made the trip to Chelmsford to watch the cars being offered.
"Everyone was stuck in and enjoyed it.
"They all sold and it was really good."
