an excellent start. But! How can they have a feature on 80's hot hatches and not have a 205Gti?

What an entertaining return and true to form. I'm a DA viewer pleased to see Hugh Bonneville.

I think they're still skewing a bit too silly. That said I LOVED the stupid car stunts with the musical chairs, lapping your own car, etc. But the grocery store slalom, the police chase with the fakey explosions. Eh. I'd have liked to see something a lot closer to the old 100-quid challenge. Something just a bit more real-world and a bit less wanton-destruction.
Clarkson announced that next week's show would be more car-orientated, so I look forward to seeing how they handle that.
I like cocking-about as much as the next person, but this episode felt a bit gratuitous and self-indulgent. Some of the dialogue was absolutely hysterical, though. "Formula strap-on" comes to mind. Are they showing this at a later time-slot these days? There was an astounding lot of boner chat, I thought.
I must express appreciation for James May's new puce trousers before I sign off, though. Ihe way they show off his legs!

A pretty good start, and the series looks like it's going to be a good one It wasn't perfect - I think the hot hatch film would have been better as a two-parter with a 'straight' review for balance, but some of the 'acceptable in the 80s' section was hysterical. I do think Richard probably killed his car during the hill climb, given that they didn't show much of it when they were driving around the old Supermarket Sweep set (though the stuff going in the air over the top of the shelves cracked me up). I also thought some of the humour was a little near the knuckle for the timeslot (oh god, I'm getting old), but I've noticed the standards have been getting looser over the last few years anyway - and now the show is wholly owned by the BBC again, the ball is in their court, compliance wise... Having said that, the 'Formula Strap-One' was an inspired line, and as much as some people say this kind of episode is Top Gear dumbing down, James's "the 'Hey! Wayne!'" was genius. So... could do better, but not a bad start. You don't want to start with the best episode of the series or it's downhill all the way

I pretty much agree with Wyvern and Flying Lady. Some hilarious dialogue but just a bit too much slapstick for mine. LOVED the acceptable in the 80's bit. Go Jeremy! Gave it a 7.

I enjoyed the 1st episode, I've watched it 3 times . Once on the iPlayer and twice on TV. I laughed quite a bit, I don't mind the scripted bit silliness and over the top explosions with the hot hatches. I loved the "Don't Try This at Home" 1980's car stunts and the news the best. I like James' new form fitting maroon/burgundy jeans, they aren't too loose or too tight they fit just right. I just don't like them paired with the turquoise and pink plaid shirt (my 70-something mother has a similar outfit ) My brother said they should have added some truck nuts to those F1 cars(rofl) As far as I can tell it shown unedited on BBC America Monday night, with nothing blurred out & all the same music as when it was shown on British TV. BBC Amer. is odd with their censoring, one can say "sh*t", but blur they out drawings of "gentlemen's sausages" or the words "tosser" & "scum" when it was written on Jeremy's and Richard's cars in The Sweeney bit from S18 E03 I wish they could show the episodes the next day after they air in Britain, if they can show Doctor Who the same day they should be able run TG 24 hrs later in the U.S. I like that it is on Monday night it gives me something fun to look forward to. Sunday nights are too jammed packed with new programs most of the time Over all I give it a 9

Ello All - it's been a while. I may not have the yearnings for James these days but I still won't miss Top Gear, so I thought I'd pop back. I really enjoyed episode one - it wasn't so much a car based factual (ish) programme but more a highly entertaining bit of silliness. They do that very well indeed and I had a good chuckle. I still like James with a false moustache - and there are times when the old stirrings resurrect themselves......that false moustache does it for me!
Yes, it is odd.
