James May tested the new "Lada Kalina." He says that it's fascinating to see the evolution of the factory to it's current state. Also he drove a new Kalina for 500 meters and said that 1, 2 and reverse gears are ok and the seats are comfortable Source

Two reviews James May’s Cars of the People, episode 2, BBC Two, review: 'richly researched'
James May's amiable history of quirky cars was marred by puerile stunts, says Jasper Rees James May finds a Renault 4 and Citroen 2CV in a farmyard in Blois, France, in BBC series The People's Car Photo: BBCBy Jasper Rees 17 Aug 2014 Anyone else noticed a plague of apostrophes colonising the TV schedules? Andrew Marr’s Great Scots, Kate Adie’s Women of the First World War, Melvyn Bragg’s Radical Lives. They’re like locusts. It’s a cult of personality brought to you by the genitive case. Who else has been apostrophised? James May, that’s who. Or James May’s Cars of the People (BBC Two). In the previous episode May kicked off this amiable and richly researched series about affordable automobiles with a tour of totalitarianism’s family cars. In this second episode the story moved on from the Beetle, the Trabi and the Lada to the postwar years of economic confidence when the race was on to get the capitalist masses on the move. Some of the quirkier attempts to invent cheap means of locomotion duly supplied May – looking like Mr Incredible folded into various microcars – with an open goal. The symmetrical Zundap Janus looked comically identical from front and back. The Messerschmitt Tiger was essentially a fighter plane without the wings and tail. The French VSP was so basic that 15-year-olds with no road experience were allowed to drive it. At the zenith of the VSP's popularity 50 people were dying on the roads in France every day. To demonstrate how and why, May was given a hair-raising spin in one by an unlicensed French teenager. May, Top Gear’s other lamp post in jeans, always has a job on his hands distinguishing himself from Jeremy Clarkson. For the viewer in the passenger seat May is much more pleasant company, less prone to scorn and simmering outrage, and even on for sending himself up. But some DNA is hard to sluice out of the system. It’s not just the midlife crisis hair, it’s the puerility. To illustrate French folly at trying to pass off the 2CV and Renault 4 as military vehicles, May parked them in a quarry and started firing at them with a rifle. When that didn’t make enough holes, he switched to a semi-automatic, then a machine gun, then a bazooka, while the Ode to Joy and Je ne regrette rien played on the soundtrack. I don’t wish to lose my sense of humour but elsewhere in the world, weapons such as these are not being fired for entertainment. *jamesdmay made a few posts down in the comments section*The Telegraph Isn't it time James May traded in his Jeremy Clarkson tribute act? CHRISTOPHER STEVENS reviews last weekend's TVJames May's Cars of the People (BBC2) ** 17 August 2014
Among the overgrown schoolboys of Top Gear, James May always looks like the swot who tags along with the troublemakers, desperate to be liked. At any real-life boy’s school, the other two — sixth-form bully Jeremy Clarkson and third-form oik Richard Hammond — would shove May’s head down the loo and steal his tuck money every morning. You’d think poor old James would learn his lesson and steer clear. But even when he gets the chance to make a programme on his own, he turns it into a Top Gear rip-off. And that’s a crying shame, because as Cars Of The People (BBC2) proves, May is an able and interesting TV presenter . . . until he starts the Clarkson impersonations. Top Gear made its reputation with daft stunts and tongue-in-cheek racism. May seems uncomfortable with both. There was an audible wince in his voice as he wheeled out the ‘funny foreigner’ cliches, such as exclaiming ‘sacre bleu’ when he drove a Renault 4. And he looked downright scared when he helped a ballistics expert fire a bren gun and a bazooka at a Citroen 2CV. James is much more comfortable behind the wheel, treating cars the way the rest of us do. He launched into a little paean to the 2CV, when he actually drove one instead of obliterating it — the perennial French classic was ‘charming and strangely adorable’, he declared. The theme of this three-part series has him really engaged, and that communicates itself to the viewer. For all the supercars and prototypes paraded on Top Gear, most people will only ever drive runabouts and family cars, because that’s all we need and the most we can afford. But some have been beloved motoring icons, like the Mini and the VW Beetle, and some have been objects of derision, like the Austin Allegro and the Ford Mondeo. What makes certain cars cool? The first two episodes haven’t managed to answer that, though they’ve thrown up some entertaining detail. I’d forgotten that the Lada Riva was briefly popular as a budget-priced car in the UK, and I had no idea this workhorse of the Soviet bloc was originally built in Italy by communist firebrands at the Fiat factory. For the last 15 minutes, the show took a bizarre detour into the history of Japanese mopeds, ending with a horrible scene where May mocked a Japanese motor executive by bowing endlessly until the poor man had to turn and walk away. Next week, he might redeem himself, if he talks about the cars that turned the British middle classes into motorists — the Triumph Herald, the Morris 1100 and the Cortina. Or he might carry on like a feeble Jeremy Clarkson tribute act, wasting a decent documentary and his own career at the same time. Daily Mail

Does anybody know who picked the music for this? I tried finding it out by looking at the credits, but as I know next to nothing about the what the job titles mean it didn't help. Liked the choice of songs a lot and was wondering if a person close to my age picked them, from Pearl Jam to Pizzicato Five is was a bit 90ties-ish!

Henry just turned 30 a couple days ago, September 9th according to his Twitter feed I remember hearing Joy Division in the 1st episode when James was driving the Volkswagen, which made me laugh. I can't think of any songs from episode 2 off the top of my head. Pink Floyd when he was driving the Countach, there was lots of 80s music in the 3rd episode The Clash, The Cure, Van Halen, Eurythmics

Thanks for the detailed answer, RedMoon! Is is usual for the editor to pick the soundtrack, too? It was a great mix indeed. Joy Division is always good, espacially when so cleverly placed.

Главная » Газета» VA in English»AVTOVAZ’s Affairs TOP GEAR WILL COVER AVTOVAZA shooting team of Top Gear, a popular British TV motoring program, worked at our plant on the 12th of July 2013. The program was first released in Great Britain back in 1977, later its broadcasting started in many countries of the world (according to relevant sources, its TV audience is 350 million spectators!) The famous British television presenter James May could personally realize how popular the program is in Russia – during the breaks between the shooting sessions in the plant he had his pictures taken all the time together with young AVTOVAZ employees who were just happy with such a good luck. The crew visited many production areas of AVTOVAZ. They filmed a lot in stamping shops and in LADA 4х4 assembly shop, where the journalist talked to Petr Prusov, one of the most well-known persons among VAZ motorists and “father” of the Russian off-road vehicle. – Fantastic vehicle! – that is how the English guys expressed their opinion of his creation. Petr Prusov accepted the complement, but gave his remark in a wise manner: – Only cognac becomes better with years, while even the best of cars needs renewal after certain time. The TV presenter was just interested in LADA 4х4 modernization, in particular, whether this off-road vehicle will keep really affordable price? Nowadays one can hardly buy another vehicle like this for the same money… The TV team also talked of AVTOVAZ’ history with the veteran of Russian automotive industry, as Prusov participated in actually every important project of our plant. After the shooting, Petr Prusov share with the readers of Volzhski Avtostroitel newspaper of his impressions of the conversation with the British journalist. – He is a very professional journalist. I can compare, as I have got many chances to be interviewed by foreign TV channels. I liked his objective manner, this is a rare thing; sometimes we are visited by guys having already their preconceived opinion trying to adapt everything they see to their concept. As for this journalist, I felt he was interested in the actual reality. I hope he will present our plant and our cars without any distortions to his audience. It looked like the English guys really wanted to reflect every aspect of AVTOVAZ’ life – during break between shooting sessions inside production shops they even looked in the canteen No.14. There James May personally tasted a standard lunch set staying in the focus of camera stared at him. And, as he continued eating his meal even after the camera was switched off, he seemed to like the meal in the plant's canteen. - Chicken soup in particular, – confirmed the English journalist during a short interview he gave to our newspaper (after validation from London). - You've been to many automotive plants of the world, and it is interesting to know: did you see anything special at AVTOVAZ?– I don't keep any exact count, but your plant is about the 25th in a row. AVTOVAZ is the largest of those visited by our crew. Your scale is striking. I was surprised that here in some areas you have old equipment, probably, since the 70s, and at the same time we saw very modern shops, state-of-the-art. As to your company's products, my personal like is LADA 4х4. – You program is welcomed in the whole world. What would you like to tell about AVTOVAZ in your show? - We always try to give our stories about cars for common people. So we have come to have a look how LADA cars that are marketed for many years in different countries around the world are built. This is the task of our program. Shooting at AVTOVAZ lasted all day, and late in the afternoon the English TV journalist interviewed the President of JSC AVTOVAZ Igor Komarov. ladamedia.ru/newspaper/VA-in-English/AVTOVAZ_Affairs/AVTOVAZ-Affairs/page6/top_gear_will_cover_avtovaz

I was in Italy recently and saw 2 concerts of Il Volo. I don't know if any of you have heard of them. They are a trio, 2 tenors, 1 baritone from Sicily and Italy. Their voices are outstanding and nice eye candy. To the point: My best friend didn't know who the young man was that I took a picture of. I told her and she assumed I was following them because they were good looking. I dissuaded her by saying The Top Gear guys were my first trio to which she replied they are more my speed. First and foremost a Top Gear Fan. At least Il Volo comes to the States. Are we ever going to get a Top Gear Live. I do have an autographed book by James May thanks to Dit.

I think it was about 3 years ago. That's why I got a mini thrill in taking a picture of Piero of Il Volo, totally unexpected and a likable young man. These little things in life are worth it. Still a night owl Dit. Any new stories on your mind since you put the last one to rest?

Yes, still a night owl. It suits me well, particularly since I gave up work so I don't have to get up at the crack of dawn!
I still write, though nothing that would interest the board. I write for my theatre group - we tour a Murder Mystery around the locality each year and I'm now responsible for that. I also write an annual entertainment for another group that I'm involved in, and I write short stories occasionally for a magazine (small!)
I have to say that I can't see me writing anything like The Dungeon in the forthcoming future. It was a thing that worked for me at the time and also seemed to suit the membership of the JMB, or at least some of them. It's somewhere up there on the internet (the link is somewhere on the Naughty Corner if I remember rightly). Doesn't mean I'll never write anything similar in the future, it's just not where I am at the moment. Plus, I don't have the time - theatre group plus extras work!
Good to see from other sites that you are so closely involved in animal welfare. Good on you!

Thanks. I will always be true to the first trio I followed so closely but the young men are where I can follow them since I've been to 4 concerts, 2 in Italy. One thing I've always wanted to do is go to Top Gear Live but they won't come here since they can't smoke. I believe that is mostly Jezza. I'm glad you're keeping busy and not having to wake up at dawn. You are a very creative person obviously and maybe you can write a novel that has your name and we'll all queue up for an autograph! It is hard to save so many animals. I've dealt with some in the UK and all over the world. How are your furbabies? Cheers!

Late Summer early Autumn in Italy sounds like a dream vacation. Was this the trip you saw the Clarkson book at the Heathrow? Il Volo (I always end up reading their name as "Volvo") concerts pop up on PBS once in awhile. I think only Pre-teens,tweens,and or teenagers follow musicians just because they are good looking. I can't see any adult shelling out good money on concert tickets just to see a for a pretty face and hot body on stage. Barbados seems to be the closest the States are going get for Top Gear Live/Festival. Too bad there aren't any major US cities with Jeremy friendly smoking laws. Jeremy mentioned on twitter about going to Vancouver in November, for what exactly he didn't elaborate on.

I think they were going to film an episode in Vancouver not Top Gear Live. I will tell you these three young men have a following of 4-90. These are truly God given talented young men. They are very handsome but the music is outstanding. I grew up with opera and symphonies as my parents wanted us exposed to other kinds of music. When my 83 year old Aunt played their music I was astounded. Their harmonies are in sync. These are my six guys, Top Gear UK and Il Volo. They have matured and are extremely talented, each playing at least 3 instruments. Not teeny bopper music. They are operatic pop. They could almost be my grandsons.Listen to their music if you get a chance. I still love my classic rock etc.
