Sotheby's charity auction exceeds £1m
A star-studded fundraising event hosted at famous auction house, Sotheby’s, on Wednesday (May 21) has helped raise more than £1m for the sight-saving charity Orbis.
Organised by Ali Spencer-Churchill, the nephew of Sotheby’s chairman Henry Wyndham, the evening was attended by many celebrities including director Guy Richie, actress Liz Hurley and comedian Ronnie Corbett.
Mr Spencer-Churchill decided to support Orbis after his uncle became involved in the charity following a shooting accident which nearly left him blind.
Last year Mr Wyndham raised £800,000 for the charity through a coast-to-coast walk from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire. Mr Spencer-Churchill’s fundraising drive has boosted the total to £1.3m.
An auction on the evening featured original artwork by Damien Hirst and Anthony Gormley, as well as the opportunity have a portrait of your iris created by Marc Quinn. Other lots included a private dinner at the Mirabelle restaurant and a weekend break for 26 people at Tyringham Hall.

LONDON – In advance of my 190-mile walk across the UK, my friend Jeremy Clarkson was kind enough to add a few words of support. Check back in on this blog to see how the walk is progressing and please donate to ORBIS at www.virginmoneygiving.com/HenryWyndham.
