Clarkson, Hammond and May Live: The Top Gear boys are back in town July 23, 2015 Sarah Thomas James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond have been touring a live version of Top Gear since 2008."It's been an interesting and exciting time," Richard Hammond says drily, in possibly the understatement of the year. It's been a tumultuous ride for Hammond and his Top Gear colleagues Jeremy Clarkson and James May during the past few months. The long-running irreverent car show, which has boasted a worldwide audience of 350 million, disintegrated in spectacular fashion following Clarkson's "fracas" with a producer in March. The BBC TV show is to continue with new presenters at the helm, but for the original trio who, took Top Gear in 2002 from being a mere car show to a global behemoth, it's not over yet. Options for a new TV show featuring the trio, including a possible deal with Netflix, are still being worked out, but they're back on the road again after postponing live dates due to the fallout earlier this year. Now the shows featuring the artists formerly known as Top Gear are back on tour, but this time as Clarkson, Hammond and May Live. Doesn't the new name have a touch of a '70s prog rock outfit about it? "Emerson, Lake and Palmer, they're not our names. That's the main problem," Hammond says in jest. "We had to convey something about who was hosting the show. It had to contain the words Clarkson, Hammond and May, accompanied by the word 'live'. We think we summed it up, we're very pleased with it." The presenters have been touring Top Gear live shows since 2008, first visiting Australia in 2009, and during the last two years hosting weekend-long festivals at Eastern Creek. The tour has headed back into arenas, hitting Britain earlier this year followed by dates in South Africa and Norway before Australia this month. Australian fans are getting a tailor-made edition, themed around a series of pitched battles in cars against a local team featuring former Top Gear Australia presenters Shane Jacobson, Steve Pizzati and V8 Supercars presenter Riana Crehan in a tournament dubbed "The Cr-Ashes". "Basically we're going to have Steve, Riana and Shane beat the sh*t out of all of us. They're going to go berserk," Hammond says. "There will be genuine competition there, make no bones about it." Hammond says while elements of the show are finely honed, it's basically just the trio mucking about in the fashion audiences have come to expect. "It's just getting together with a load of mates. That's very much what it's about, and we're sort of the loud, showy-off ones in the pub. "We have a great time, of course we do. They're awful and pretty feeble and badly flawed individuals, but I've worked with them for 12,13 years now and we know what the others are going to say and we've heard all their jokes, but we keep finding ways of entertaining ourselves and the truth is we have a laugh. "I wish I could say it was really boring and no fun but the remarkable thing is we still have a great time. And we enjoy doing it. It's showing off on a grand scale." Hammond says the end of the TV show "broke my heart" but life will go on. "We've had a hell of year, but we're alive. We can only do one thing so we have to find a way of doing it," he says. Clarkson, Hammond and May Live is at Allphones Arena, July 25, 2pm and 6.30pm and July 26, 4pm, $90.74-$202.88. AFTER performing their downgraded live shows in Australia this week motoring presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have jetted out of Australia. The highly publicised tour of their self-titled show, which was forced to downgrade after Clarkson was fired from the BBC following a string of misdemeanours, finished up in Sydney on Sunday. May and Clarkson light up smokes as they relax by the harbour in Sydney with Top Gear Australia host Shane Jacobsen. Picture: Jeremy PiperAfter arriving from Perth on Thursday night, the popular hosts wiled away the hours between shows in the harbour city by soaking up the sun at their waterside Palm Beach residence. The trio even took time out on Sunday afternoon to enjoy a leisurely walk down by the water where they were spotted smoking, chatting and taking in the scenery. Top Gear Australia host Shane Jacobsen, who has been chaperoning his guests during their stay stood by while Clarkson and May lit up. On Friday, they were recognised by locals having lunch at Jonah’s Restaurant at Whale Beach. Having made waves on their last visits with the Top Gear festival, the persistent controversies and the loss of their association with the BBC, meant the fanfare around this trip has been noticeably low key. Despite the diminished attention, Clarkson, a former journalist, was still happy to vent his frustration at waiting media. On Saturday he sent a cranky message to a group of photographers, posting on Twitter: “Quick message to the paps in the red car behind us. I’m going home to bed. You’re wasting petrol.” The infamous personality signed off from his plane seat on Sunday night with a short farewell message accompanied by a photo of the tarmac. “Bye bye Straya,” he wrote. Richard Hammond was slightly more generous with his goodbye message, posting: “So long Australia. You were great. Thanks for having us.” Clarkson does not really like photographers all that much.www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/sydney-confidential/after-finishing-their-live-show-tour-of-australia-jeremy-clarkson-richard-hammond-and-james-may-have-left-the-country/story-fni0cvc9-1227458974952
